Benchmarks

Here you see the three 12X writers take top place in CD-R creation. The new PlexWriter 12/10/32S edges out the other two writers by a small margin. This could be because of firmware, but we’re using the latest firmware available on Plextor’s site for each drive. We attribute this to newer drive mechanism and firmware tweaks.

Let’s take a look at CD-RW creation.

The 12/10/32 drives lead the pack in writing CD-RW discs simply because they are faster. Same story here between the two drives and the minor difference in finish time.

Analysis

Choosing which burner you want out of the two we’ve talked about today depends on what type of system you have or want. If you don’t already have SCSI connectivity and don’t want to spend extra money on a SCSI host adapter, then the 12/10/32A would be the drive I recommend. It saves you setup time, and it saves you money. You lose out on some CPU cycles because of the ATAPI interface, and you don’t get a few software utilities but other than that, you still get the same speedy burns as the SCSI version. And with BURN-Proof, you won’t have to worry much about buffer under-run errors.

If you’re more of a power user or you already have SCSI in your computer, then I recommend the 12/10/32S. It has a 4MB buffer, an UltraSCSI interface, front panel controls for audio playback, and an exhaust fan at the back to keep the drive running reliably cool. I think it looks better too. You’ll get great performance out of this drive because it uses less CPU time to do the job -- thanks to the UltraSCSI interface.
