The GeForce3 seems to have a leading performance when used on a Pentium 4 system compared to a Thunderbird system. It’s likely that raw MHz speeds come into play here. Most games seem to play better on a Pentium 4 system than on an Athlon system. I found that the Pentium 4 overclocks pretty easily and because of the recent mass price cut, it's very viable. The new 1.7 P4 overclocks to 2.1 - 400MHz increase - and the increase in performance is intense. I sat and thought for a bit and realized that our readers purchase processors for their overclocking potential as well as their base potential. This is why I say that many games play better on a Pentium 4. Now, you might begin to argue otherwise saying that "Blah! The Pentium 4 only beats the Athlon at Quake3"... well, have you seen other games tested on the Pentium 4? I notice most sites have used the same games over and over again in their tests and most sites use the same game to test. It's better to actually sit down, whip out the games that you play and see what's better. Don't just listen to what review sites say blindly. That's what I mentioned in the Benchmarks page about how you can't solely base your conclusions on a review. The GeForce3 beats the GeForce2 by a solid margin thanks to the efficient Crossbar memory architecture. AquaMark AquaMark is a DirectX 8 game and utilizes heavy effects that really push a GeForce3 hard. You’ll need a really powerful system to be able to run this game, let alone the benchmark program. Looking around the net, I’ve seen the GeForce2 Ultra running about 60 to 70% slower than the GeForce3. When DirectX 8 games start coming out, a GeForce3 will be needed or another fully DX8 compliant card. |
