Gaming Benchmarks

For DVD playback CPU utilization, I used PC Mark 2002 Pro and ran their Video Performance tests. When it comes to playing back DVD’s, the i845G comes in 3rd place, right behind the 7500 and 7500LE using just a little less then 10% of the processor. Compared to the MX400 and Ti200, the i845G totally dominates them. It looks like Intel has been doing their research on hardware DVD playback.

In 3D Mark 2001SE, the i845G comes in very last place, with the exception of the 7500, which refused to complete 3D Mark. Scoring 1522 3D Marks, the onboard graphics isn’t too shabby considering its using shared memory. Compared to the MX400, the i845G falls behind by approximately 54%, which is a noticeable difference, but since it’s a synthetic benchmark, we’ll see if it represents results for everyday gaming.

The i845G even being an integrated graphics solution supports Vertex Shaders in software. Compared to the other cards, the i845G maintains a range of 23% to 38% in terms of vertex shader performance difference.

In Quake 3 Arena HQ, the i845G is able to maintain a steady 60fps at 640x480, which is approximately 56% slower when compared to the MX400. As the resolution increases, the performance gap between the i845G and MX400 increases greatly up to 65%. When compared to the 7500 and Ti200, the i845G is put to shame. Nonetheless the i845G should allow you to play Q3 at a smooth frame rate at 640x480.

When it comes to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which is a pretty new game that’s based on the Quake 3 Engine, we’re able to see the i845G score nearly identical results as in Quake 3 Arena. Compared to the MX400 again, we see that the range in performance difference is from 39% to 56%. It appears that the Intel Extreme graphics is able to scale very well when it comes to the latest games most likely due to its tile based rendering technique. Once again, the Intel Extreme Graphics isn’t a bad performer and is still able to play games at a smooth 60fps at 640x480.
