Depending on your point of view, you might consider the graphics performance weak, but from a corporate standpoint, the i845G appears to be a strong performer. With its 350 MHz RAMDAC, the i845 should provide sufficient quality for use in everyday applications without causing eyestrain. From a gamer standpoint, of course the i845G graphics looks to be weak, but when coupled with an AGP graphics card, the i845G can give the i850E a run for its money. If you’re going to build a completely new P4 system and want to wait to see which graphics card to will be the king of the hill, the i845G will provide sufficient performance for playing games at low resolutions till the Matrox Parhelia, R300, and NV30 roll around. For only a few bucks more compared to the i845E, you might as well get the onboard graphics and disable it if you don’t plan on using it and just have it just in case for emergency purposes if you’re video card dies. With its tile based rendering technique, the i845G should scale well with new games to come. For the corporate users out there, the i845G/GL would be a perfect solution as the integrated graphics coupled with an LCD flat panel would be a perfect solution for everyday productivity and content creation tasks. Since the i845G uses DVMT, it decreases the amount of dedicated memory needed, thus leaving more memory available for applications. The i845G has also been increasingly stable, which is needed for corporate systems, as downtime equals money loss. For the home users who go out and buy systems from the likes of eMachines and HP-Compaq, the i845G/GL will most likely be implemented in their systems, as utilizing an integrated chipset will cut costs on producing a system. If you’re planning to buy a system just for web browsing, email, and word processing, the i845G will be more then sufficient for your needs. As for other uses, you could always throw together a system for the wife or girlfriend with the i845G, as I highly doubt they’ll be fragging anyone in Quake 3 anytime soon. Same goes for the little kids systems, the i845G would be perfect for playing those kiddy games such as Putt Putt and Barbie! In the end, the i845G is an excellent solution from Intel, the performance is on par with any other Intel chipset, the onboard graphics is great for everyday use, and the stability can be a main selling point for corporate users. |
