its already been pushed back 6months. I really hope microsoft extends it again but its obvious why they wouldn't. 2 months is nothing, I am going to shed a tear when it is actually gone.

They have to buy new ones, isn't that part of the point of a new OS? ;)

Man, my parents are still on Windows 2000 and I use XP. Probably will still use it for a while still.

If people need it and Microsoft refuses to sell it, you know what's going to happen. People will just pirate the shit out of it.

It would be alot better if everyone would boycott Microsoft products.

Why? You sound pretty pissed at not being able to buy XP in the future but you want everyone to stop using MS products? Makes sense.

I love that everyone is getting upset that a 6 year old operating system is not going to be sold anymore. Would you get upset if Ford told you that you couldn't buy a 2002 F-150 anymore?

XP is/was a decent OS for its day. Having used Vista a bit it feels more rugged than XP ever did and I could tolerate using it on a daily basis if I had to. (Remember, I'm a rabid OS X user/Apple lover) Even all of my pc-head friends love their installs of Vista.

    Let XP die.

I have the opinion that Microsoft is an evil corporation that i have to buy into. i use XP because of some of the games i play, if they worked on Linux or Apple i would switch over in a heart beat. The whole vista issue kind of sealed it for me that they have turned into crap. Now that i find out that they are ending one of their best operating systems this tells me that this is a company in it way too much for the profits and not for a quality product. I'm not trying to say that everyone should because everyone is different and alot of people really enjoy vista. but I'm just not one of them and i just have an extreme dislike for Microsoft.

I've made peace with Vista. But Microsoft should make some sort of compromise with their customers. It's madness to pull a product people love to try and cram a product many despise.

Hate to break it to you but virtually all companies can be considered evil depending on your perspective. As for the "vista issue kind of sealed it for me" aspect - did you use it and for how long?

If MS is into more profits why wouldn't they come out with a new OS each year or even have customers buy service packs? Juball has a point - it *has* been six years.

So - how comparable is Ubuntu? or X-Ubuntu?... (Since we are doing the whole OS preferences thing)

I've been wanting to get away from Windows...but I haven't researched enough to kinda learn the alternatives....

I'm sure Octane is arguing the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule, which I can understand. I dislike Vista's features as much as the next guy but times are a-changing and it's good to be on the ball with the latest stuff...especially since you'll be seeing Vista more frequently. I wouldn't say so much in corporate environments though.

I have but I'd rather put down the money, go legit and not have to wonder which monthly repack I have to download next. I'd rather not spend the time keeping up to date on what new MS fix is going to screw over my bootleg copy.

from day one of beta 2 for how ever long it was before it went live, then i used vista business 32bit for 4 months on this machine. then vista business 64 i still have running on a laptop that my mother uses. the issues im having with it is i had just bought a brand new machine for vista and when i went to install it the first time after beta i got 2 critical install fails having something about windows explorer didnt install correctly, then once i finally got it installed every 20 minutes i got a BSOD on my current system (C2D E6600, MSI P6N SLI Platinum, 2 gig of corsair XMS ram, 500gb 7200 RPM maxtor drive, BFG 8800GTS 640 superclocked, soundblaster X-FI xtreme gamer, 750watt thermaltake tough power, hp dvd burner and a lite-on dual layer dvd burner) and i just couldnt stay in the OS long enough to solve the problem so i wiped the drive and went back to XP professional with enhanced security features and been with it ever since. and yes Bear i am going with the if it aint broke dont fix it mindset that even if XP is 6 years old, most business, schools and some homes still use XP, its what ive used for the last 6 years and so i must be thinking that its a great product and i have no need to upgrade.

I was in the same boat when I installed Business. I could do most basic things but video drivers, tv tuner card, audio drivers, hell everything caused problems. July or August rolled around, I wiped it all and put on the manufacturer's latest Vista offerings and haven't had a problem since. At first Vista was absolute garbage because of the incompatibility but slowly vendors are catching up and it's really not that bad. SP1 even makes quite a bit of difference.

OT: one thing I really hate is Windows Mail not having multiple identities, dunno why they went that route.

Yeah give it a whirl when you're bored. The only time I've had to reboot is for updates; (knock on wood) I haven't had any random issues/blue screens; I've been able to play every game I install (COD4, FEAR, Oblivion, FIFA08). I forgot my specs but they were similar. I had to build a new machine quickly after my motherboard caps blew and my video card went belly up.

    C2D e6300
    3GB DDR2 PC800
    Gigabyte 965p-ds3
Winfast PVR XP/2000 tuner card (took forever for this to get software)
Had a Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum but could never find any drivers since it's so old.

I like Vista well enough, but the reliability issues are starting to suck. it worked awesomely after getting the drivers issues and hardware stuffe squared away. Then? My first round of auto updates. my system got so FUBAR's from updates, that I had to reinstall and do manual updates. I'm starting to rate this OS on the scale of windowsMe. DX10, has not been worth the switch from XP, it's better, but not this much better IMO.

gah, i remember when xp first came out.. everyone was complaining about it, it was too bloated too slow, fisher pricey, driver problems, etc..

and now look, its been one of the best microsoft products yet.
if windows 7 doesnt steal vista's limelight, then i have a feeling in several years we'll be talking about how awesome and fast vista is..
