Exactly. Tex have you ever shot a .223? I'm not saying it's weak, but it's definately not a big game rifle. If someone saw you hunting deer with a 223 they would laugh at you. Now if you're hunting raccoons or coyotes it would be damn fine.
I'm less of a hunter, more a shooter. I've shot a .223 a shitload of times. the only bigger thing I've shot was 7.28, a few AKs and some niceass HK. What the hell are you guys talking about thats bigger? .50 cal is the only one I can think of off the top of my head, and thats kind of a novelty item for hunting  And common ammo, like stuff you can buy at the range/gun store. I was under the impression that 7mm was a pea-shooter, smaller 9mm. Its a higher powered round or what? Link me plz and with the regards to hunting, i guess we're full blown redneck, a shitload of people around here use ARs for hunting, some guy I know keeps an AK on his farm for shooting rabbits.. EDIT: and i'm a scrawny bastard, the 7.28 nearly knocks me on my ass. I'm like 120lbs right now... :-(
AR-10 is what you're thinking of, ar-10s are sweet but are twice the price of a build-it-yourself ar15, and finding reliable mags are a problem. New mags are coming, but they been saying that awhile...
Bushmaster makes a couple dozen varieties of .308 AR-15s. I think a number of companies have in recent years.
Just get the 30/06. Packs a punch and will fullfill your needs for deer, elk, black bear and just about any big game in north america....with maybe the exception being moose and grizzlys, for those, you'll want at least a 7mm mag. You may be able to get a remington for three bills, but you're going to have to skimp on your scope.....not a good idea. You could probably pick up a savage 110E 30/06 for 250, which still wouldn't leave much for a good scope. A good leopold 2X7, with mounts, rings and bore sighting will cost upwards of 175 bux. A 3x9 is a good scope, but if it's as brushy where you hunt as it is in Oregon, you won't need that much magnification. I've found that 2x7 is great for hunting blacktails and the habitat they call home. PS...for those that aren't familiar with the hunting version of firearms, the high powered rounds that are designed for hunting are packed for 2000-3000 feet per second and used pretty much the domestic equivalent of military full metal jacket projectiles and are packed with twice the powder as handgun rounds. A 7mm mag without a good recoil pad will bruise you up pretty good. I used to pack my rounds for 3000 fps with a 180 grain jacketed softpoint so they'd shoot flatter in the mountanous terrain around my home.
every round that miller listed is bigger than the 223. plus a few more not listed. Remember, just because the .mil used the m16 which fires the 223/556 doesnt mean its a big bad scary round, or that the liberal media says so either. not that id want to be shot by one or nothing. but compared to the other rifle rounds, the 223 is near the bottom. My google-fu is weak, so for the 7mm round, next time your at wally world or a local gun store, open a box of 7mm and see for yourself. its bigger than a 30.06 if that helps any. and i think you mean 7.62 nearly knocks you down
well i went shopping yesterday at gander mountain, i looked at the remington 710 and a savage, forgot the model, but it came with scope was synthetic for 400$, the guy said it was a better gun, but it felt cheap, the remington felt much better built to me. i didnt buy anything, they were insanly overpriced. the search continues
anyone know much about the remington 7400, i used one last year to hunt and it was a nice gun. i have heard stories of jamming problems, anyone know anything about that
They're awefull heavy to pack for 4-6 hours. If I buy another hunting rifle, it's got to be a Winchester feather-lite.....spendy but easy to pack in the woods.
I never said you recommended it, I just said you called it "ghetto". I could bring down a deer or a bank teller with it, so for my uses "ghetto" is OK...
