Updated: September 22, 1999 Written by: Dan "Tweak Monkey" Kennedy More Game Tweaks Quake 2 Some people have asked me why Quake 2 looks ugly on the Voodoo3. I usually reply "It does? Mine looks fine." because it really does look fine. If your Quake 2 looks or plays completely weird, and you've tried the latest driver set, try installing older drivers. Enter your Quake2\Baseq2\ folder (Usually C:\Quake2\Base2q\). If you see a file called "autoexec.cfg", then you already have an autoexec. If you want to edit this file, or create a new one, go create one in the Quake 2 Autoexec Creator. The Autoexec Creator will let you optimize and customize nearly every visual/audio/misc. aspect of Quake 2. You can make the game look better, brighter, darker, or whatever you want, while still boosting the frame rate significantly. Just click here to head to the Quake2 Autoexec Creator. There are also Autoexec Creators for Sin and Half-Life. Quake 3 (or Q3Test) Many people are telling me that Q3Test looks and runs bad on Voodoo3 systems. But with my Pentium II 266 / Voodoo3 3000 system, it works great! Here are my recommendations for playing Quake3 with a Voodoo3: First, make sure you've installed the latest drivers! Start Q3 up and hit ESC. Choose System Configuration. Choose Graphics Options. Choose Default OpenGL for the renderer. Then Try sliding the Texture Detail bar all the way to the right. This will improve the overall detail of the game, at the cost of performance. I highly recommend that you disable dynamic lighting, because it distracts from the game by making things hard to see and it sucks up a great deal of performance. This can be done by bringing down the console (~) and typing r_dynamiclight 0. If you need more performance, then you should enable "simple item" mode. This will remove the bubbles around energy power-ups and the ring around other items like Quad damage. It can boost performance slightly. Do this by typing cg_simpleitems 1 at the console. If you need even more performance, then you should try disabling the marks on the walls. This can give a significant performance boost, and it makes things less confusing in huge multiplayer games. Type cg_marks 0 at the console to do this. Adjust the brightness if it seems too dark/bright by typing r_gamma at the console. The default value is 1.0. I recommend setting this to 1.2 if you're having a hard time seeing things or as low as .80 if there is too much glare. To set this value, type r_gamma 1 (or the value you desire). Once you have adjusted the gamma, type vid_refresh at the console and hit enter. Now your new brightness setting will be active. I also recommend that you keep the resolution no higher than 1024x768 to keep the frame rate high. If your computer can handle the game at very high resolutions without many slow-downs, set it higher (if you want). To display the frame rate at all times, type cg_drawfps "1" at the console. For tons of Quake3 tweaks, visit The Reverend's site. His Quake3 tweak guide is the biggest and most complete around. Unreal Out of the box, Unreal worked almost perfectly with Voodoo Graphics and Voodoo2 cards. However, it has been known to give certain problems with Voodoo3 cards. I suggest that you install Unreal, run the game once, and choose Yes when it asks if you have a 3dfx card. Then you should download the latest patch, and re-run the game. This time it should be better. Make sure to drop some details if the frame rate is low. For more information on tweaking Unreal's performance (and links to the latest patches), check out the Unreal Tweak Guide. I will add more games to this section with each update. If you know of a game with problems and/or a solution, let me know! Stay tuned for news on updates. |
