Summing Things Up

Performance:
[ 9.7/10 ]

The performance of the 12x4x32 Ultra SCSI is top notch and its low CPU utilization helped when we were doing other *coughs* important tasks.

Innovation:
[ 9.2/10 ]

While not being the first drive to reach 12X, Plextor has packed enough innovation into its drives to make them rock solid and keep spindle vibration to a minimal.

Installation and Setup:
[ 8.5/10 ]

Well, we did make a few coasters, but that was due to incompatible software. But the SCSI ID issue was weird. I simply swapped out the 8x2x20 with the 12x4x32 and hoped that all would be well but that wasn’t the case. Nevertheless, we solved the problem and now everything works well.

Bundle:
[ 9.5/10 ]

Some of the included utilities are a fine addition to the drive itself, but we have to wonder why Plextor didn’t bundle a more recent version of Adaptec’s EasyCD Creator.

Price:
[ 8.8/10 ]

Currently the price for this drive goes for about $370US. It’s steep, but for what you get, it’s definitely worth considering.

Overall: [ 9.2 / 10 ]

Conclusion

Plextor has done a great job and we can’t wait for its next release. We would also like to see them make DVD drives and combo DVD and CD writers in one. The market is still open for them to make so many other drives; we’re surprised to see them stick only to CD-ROM and CD-RW drives.

We believe that the PlexWriter 12x4x21 Ultra SCSI is the best SCSI burner you can buy. It’s also featured in our Ultimate PC: Issue 1. If you have any questions, feel free to write me here or join #tweak3d on any Efnet server in IRC.
