Conclusion

Performance
[10/10]

What was that I heard on the radio at a sports event? Oh yes, It just doesn’t get much better than this. That describes the Rhythmic Edge very well. Before this I had a Sound Blaster Live! Value, I loved it. Then I installed the Rhythmic Edge, the sound quality is so much better its absolutly amazing. At around fifty dollars you can’t go wrong with this budget based soundcard.

Innovation
[9/10]

Philips has created one of the best audio DSP’s I have heard in a long time. The Thunderbird Avenger DSP sounds absolutly astonishing. I’m glad more people are getting into the sound card market, this way they will have to make their products better and cheaper. You’ve got to love competition between businesses. Consumers get all of the benefits or great products are very resonable prices.

Installation
[10/10]

Installation was as easy as it could be. All I had to do was remove my old sound card then insert the Rhythmic Edge. Upon boot it asked for the CD, I inserted it and it went about itself doing its driver installation. I didn’t even have to reboot in Windows XP it just started working ?

Bundle
[7/10]

The Rhythmic Edge comes with the following:
  • Custom Siren Xpress music player

  • AudioPix

  • Acid Xpress
  • Drivers for Win9x/NT/2000/XP

  • Yamaha YXG50 soft-synthysizer
The bundle isn’t to bad for a soundcard that only costs 50 dollars. However, I didn’t have need for any of the programs but the drivers but someone may. I’m not going to take off points for not including full version games or anything since this is a budget soundcard.

Price
[10/10]

Philips has priced the Rhythmic Edge very competitively at around 50 dollars. It has everything that most normal people would need that are in the market for a budget soundcard. The only thing that it leaves to be desired, in my opinion, is support for five channels. However, it is only a budget soundcard so you can’t have all the goodies and the cheap price. I can tell you from experience that I would buy this over the Sound Blaster Live! Value. However, I have not heard the quality of Creative’s new Audigy so I cannot comment on that.

Closing Words

Philips has created a budget soundcard and created it right. They offer many features for their consumers that can’t afford the price of high performance soundcards. They sound quality is also very nice on the Rhythmic Edge. The Thunderbird Avenger DSP it uses could very well make Philips a huge competition for Creative.

Budget consumers very often can’t afford expensive 5.1 surround sound speakers. Especially for their computers. Philips has added many software features to improve the sound quality of stereo speakers and four speaker setups. Qxpander does a great job at virtually widening the sound field coming from two stereo speakers. The DVD Qsurround does a good job at creating a virtual 5.1 surround sound atmosphere around a user with only two or four speakers. If you are in the market for a new soundcard and are on a tight budget, I would have no problem at all recommeding the Rhythmic Edge PSC703.

Overall Score: 9.5/10
