Introduction Many people were wondering where I was last Thursday / Friday (April 20th and 21st, 2000). Some people guessed on the forums that I was visiting Nvidia to check out their latest card, while others thought I was venturing out to conquer the world. I couldn't reply because I didn't want people to know where I was -- but many guessed correctly. I was in Sunnyvale, California. And yes, I was being shown the GeForce 2 GTS at Nvidia. I wasn't alone, actually. Also present were Felby from RivaZone, Greg from Riva Extreme, Razor from Planet GeForce, Mike from nV News, Ben from Riva3D, Brian from 3D GPU, Scott from Bjorn3D, and Joe from PC Rave. Yes, it was a mess! I will probably write an article later about my second trip to Nvidia. As you can tell from this preview's title and from the bit I just wrote, Nvidia's new chip is out, and it is called the GeForce 2 GTS. You have to know what the GeForce is by now and what it offers, but the name GTS may be a bit new...
GTS: GigaTexel Shader GTS stands for "GigaTexel Shader". As the name suggests, some new features have been added to the GeForce 256, but we'll get to that later... What is a GigaTexel? It is one billion filtered textured pixels. But the GeForce 2 GTS's powerhouse doesn't stop there -- it delivers up to a full 1.6 billion texels/sec; more than three times that of the GeForce 256. But the speed increase isn't the only upgrade that the GeForce 256 received. The term "shader" should have indicated a new lighting feature as part of the T&L system. The shading engine enables per-pixel shading and lighting. Want to see pictures of this thing in action? Want specs? Want benchmarks? Does it suck or kick ass or what!? All of this and more is ahead in this juicy GeForce 2 GTS preview... |
