MSI GeForce4 Ti4600

Overclocking

MSI has set the stock speeds on the card to a core clock of 300Mhz and a RAM clock of 660Mhz. I was able to get the card running stable at a core clock of 320Mhz and a RAM clock of 735Mhz. You can probably get a higher ram clock if you apply some heatsinks to the RAM.

Benchmarks

Test bed:
Lian-Li PC60
Asus A7V333-R
Athlon XP 1800+
256MB PC2700 DDR
Maxtor 80GB Fluid Bearing HDD
D-Link DFE530tx+ NIC
Windows XP Professional
Via 4 in 1 4.28
DirectX 8.1

Video card configurations used are as follows: NVidia Detonator 28.32 on all tests. Default clock speeds: 300/660 Overclocked speeds: 320/735

320Mhz core and 735Mhz RAM clocks will be used in the overclocking tests because it offers the best stability from the card. All tests will be conducted using no antialiasing, quincunx antialiasing, and either 4x or 4xS depending whether the game uses Direct3D or OpenGL.

Analysis:

3Dmark2001 SE ran very smoothly throughout all tests. Although, when rendering the tests at 1280x1024 using 4xS antialiasing it degraded the performance a great deal. While 4xS is playable, many people today will probably desire to run Quincunx and keep a higher frame rate. Quincunx still improves the image quality of games nicely.

Analysis:

Like 3Dmark and all othes games, Quake3 really takes a hit in frame rate when you are using 4x antialiasing in conjunction with a higher resolution. I prefer to use 4xS and keep the nearly 70fps. 4xS really makes a game nice to look at while enjoying the afternoon frag with your friends. I used Q3Bench in conjunction with Quake3 with no patches added.

Analysis:

Wow, what a powerful game. While it does not have the greatest graphics in the world, it sure knows how to kill your frame rate. For this game, and future games to come 4xS will not be a widely used setting for most users. Twenty-five frames per second can become aggravating after a while of playing.

Analysis:

For Return to Castle Wolfenstein, we used the checkpoint time demo. The maximum frame rate we achieved was 116fps while the lowest being 54.8fps. As you can see from the graphs, the numbers didn’t change to much until you got to the high resolution 4x antialiased benchmark. Overall, the MSI GeForce4 Ti4600 is a great performer in all tests run compared to its predecessors.
