Matrix M3D
Many have tried to produce a hardware virtual surround decoder, most have failed. Usually when speakers incorporate a decoder that produces a virtual surround effect out of a 2 channel audio source, the solution usually doesn’t sound too good and has accuracy problems. Logitech’s in-house developed M3D is an exception. M3D works similar to how Dolby Pro Logic II and the Q Sound Engine used on the Acoustic Edge, it takes a 2 channel source and creates 4 discrete audio channels by extracting audio data from the 2 channel signal. In the end you get a very good sounding virtual matrix surround sound that sounds almost like the speakers were receiving audio data from a 4 channel source. If you’re choosing to upgrade your sound card or speakers, you might want to consider these speakers for use with your 2 channel sound card.
