Test systems: Pentium III 450MHz @ 558MHz Asus P3B-F motherboard Athlon 800MHz @ 856MHz Asus K7M c1.04 motherboard Micron 256MB 133MHz SDRAM ASUS V7700 32MB - NVIDIA Detonators 5.16 Diamond Monster Sound MX300 Quantum Fireball ATA 33 Benchmark details: Quake 3 Arena with Point Release 1.17: Demo001 Quake 3 Arena 1.17 - 640x480 Fastest, Normal, High Quality Quake 3 Arena 1.17 - 800x600 Fastest, Normal, High Quality Quake 3 Arena 1.17 - 1024x768 Fastest, Normal, High Quality Quake 3 Arena 1.17 - 1280x1024 Fastest, Normal, High Quality 3DMark 2000 @ 32bit Color, 32bit texture 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 ![]() We see that even on a Pentium III 500MHz, the WinFast GeForce 2 GTS kicks. Noting that the geometry T&L functions are done on the GPU, having a relatively midrange processor doesn't pull the performance down too much. Even on a lower PII or Celeron, the GeForce 2 GTS really shines -- thanks to onboard T&L, which takes a huge load off the processor, leaving it free to do other tasks such as AI, physics, and sound. The WinFast is 1 or 2 frames per second shy of the other cards most of the time, but that's okay. It doesn't really matter and the performance is virtually indistinguishable from the other cards. And besides, the cost of the card is less expensive and comes with the VIVO module (with the $10 extra cost, it still is one of the lowest priced GeForce 2 based cards out there). Let's go on to 3DMark 2000. ![]() Here the WinFast does very well and kept up with all the other cards. Again, this is typical GeForce 2 performance for you so you won't really find much difference from card to card. Where you might find the difference in terms of performance is how well they all overclock compared to each other. But then again, overclocking yields a low increase in performance in most applications. Performance really only scales well when you overclock in high fillrate operations. |
