Conclusion
The Pentium 4 2.4 GHz marks another speed increase for the Pentium 4 line of processors. Though it still uses a 400 MHz, it still is able to outperform its 2.2 GHz predecessor by 8% in most benchmarks. If you already have a 2.0 or 2.2 GHz Northwood processor, it’s not worth the upgrade, unless you always want to have the fastest processor (Intel) available or you do a lot of content creation and require all the horsepower you can get.
Unless you’re doing any of the above, I can’t justify any reasons why you would want to upgrade to a P4 2.4 GHz if you already have a 2.0 or 2.2 GHz Northwood processor. But nonetheless, if you’re still running a Pentium 3 and are looking to go travel the Intel path for an upgrade, the Pentium 2.4 GHz might be what you want if you’re looking for the fastest (Intel) processor available.
With the launch of the 2.4 GHz, this means that the lower models will drop in price, which means cheaper processors for everyone :O). In the end, the 2.4 GHz is a viable solution if you’re stuck on a Pentium 3, or Socket 423 system, if you already have a Northwood 2.0 or 2.2 GHz processor the 2.4 GHz isn’t really worth the upgrade. Nonetheless, if you have the money, go for it, if you’re on a tight budget and want a P4, I suggest going with either the 1.6A or 1.8A which can be found cheaply online for around $200.
Lastly, for those of you who are wondering why we didn’t include benchmarks of the Athlon XP2100+ in this review, we’re holding the XP2100+ vs. 2.4 GHz comparison for our next article which will be due up within the next few days entitled “Intel vs. AMD Round 2,” stay tuned everybody!
