Posted: May 8, 2001 Written by: Tuan "Solace" Nguyen Analysis and Conclusion Is the Asus V8200 Deluxe worth your $450? That depends on a number of factors. Do you need all those video in and out options? Do you play games often on the TV? If you don’t, will you be doing so a lot if you had the V8200 Deluxe? Do you really want to play all your games in 3D stereo? Keep in mind that when turning on stereo mode, your performance goes down. What’s really good about the V8200 Deluxe is that it’s a “deluxe” card? You can have lots of fun with its extra features and discover things you thought you couldn’t do before. The 3D effect in Asus’ shutter glasses is very cool and it’s something you’ll want to show off to all your friends. On the speed front, the V8200 performs just as well as the Leadtek WinFast GeForce3 so I’d have to give it just as much brownie points. There’s nothing to be ashamed of if you’re talking about speed on a GeForce3. If you’re a FSAA lover, the GeForce3 is the only card to get. Using Quincunx will give your existing games a level of detail you’ve never seen before and at a speed loss you can afford to lose. All the new architecture and technology that NVIDIA has packed into GeForce3 makes it a force to be reckoned with. Going a step further, Asus adds its own special herbs and spices to the mix. The V8200 is the first non-reference design GeForce3 board I’ve seen. Because of the custom design, Asus adds a slew of extra features without increasing board size, which is something we can all appreciate when trying to cool the inside of our computers. Some of you may be asking what would I get if I were to go out right now and purchase a GeForce3 board. Firstly, I don’t use a TV to play my games, but I do like to watch TV and edit videos, so the Video inputs on the V8200 are a big plus for me. The VR glasses are very cool and are easier to handle than my Revelators and I don’t have to go run and put on my contacts if I’m feeling lazy and just want to stick to my glasses -- the Asus VR glasses fit perfectly. I like the heatsink that Asus has on its board and they enable me to overclock better and stay cooler. The only thing buying the V8200 is its high cost, but that’s expected considering what Asus packs with the V8200 Deluxe. If price wasn’t an object, I would get the V8200 above any other GeForce3 card, but for most people, price is an object. I can’t tell you which board to get, because whichever one you ultimately choose depends on what you want and what you need. All in all, the V8200 Deluxe is a great card and I think Asus has provided good features with the card that aren’t fluff features but are actually usable. The V8200 deserves to be on the top of your list if you’re looking for a souped up GeForce3 card. |
