Asanté FriendlyNet 3004LC

Print Server

Setting up the routers built in print server is a very simple task. To do it so simply insert the CD-Rom included with your router. It contains the driver needed to communicate with the routers print server. After installing the driver simply go into your printer control panel, then add a new local printer. Either select your printer from the list or install the driver manually. After the printer driver is installed go into the printers properties and select the “Ports” tab in Windows XP. It will be something similar in Windows 98/ME. Then select the PRT port. That is all there is to it unless you changed your routers IP address. If you did, you will need to change the PRT port to search for the printer on your routers new IP address instead of the default 192.168.123.254.

Conclusion

The Asanté FR3004LC is a great choice for a home-based Cable/DSL/even 56K router. It has run flawlessly for me during my tests. This is one of the most feature-packed routers designed for the home. It has everything from the ability to share 56K connections (excluding AOL and CompuServe) to a built in print server. Routers are a definite must have for someone wanting to share their Internet connection among all of the PC’s in their home. The Asanté, would now, be at the top of my list of routers to choose from.

Pros:

  • Built in print server.
  • Has just about every feature anyone could want in a router.
  • Sleek looks.

Cons:
  • The plastic casing feels like it’s cheap quality and could break easily.
  • Holds quite a bit more heat than other routers I have used, so you might want to keep it away from external heat sources and in a cool room if possible.

Score: 9/10
