If things change, it means the bible is not the literal word of God. Change is bad for most people. Changing their faith isn't going to be a change they want to do. That's why Christianity refuses to budge and go with the times, though some sects of Christianity manage to cope with modern times.

Doesn't it seem like an all knowing God would get it right the first time? Maybe he was just lazy though.

Actually Christians do NOT believe the non-believers are heathens but rather "Lost" in terms of not hearing "the good word" which is salvation offered through Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross. No one like's being called lost I know, it's the relative term used though.

The Bible encompasses many generations of civiliized/uncivilized thinking and belief, good and bad. All is documented (ie: Sodom and Gomorrah)...

Where did you get those numbers? The reason Christian numbers are so high among inmates is because you have three choices in prison: Join a race/gang, be a sex slave, or become Christian and have no protection but take your chances (they do get respect as long as they don't do anything to contradict their Christianity - If they are found to, they get killed).

Which j0k3r posted is the "Greatest commandment of all."

And zeitgeist videos don't count? I'd rather put my faith in a power I can't see in a world I can't comprehend the creation of rather than wear a tinfoil hat and doubt my goverment to those extents and act like I know it all.... Which IMO takes more faith.

That's your decision and IMHO neither is wrong... just representing the other side.

The old testament is the Jewish bible. Christians wrote part two later with a new character, Jesus. That's why Jews don't believe in Jesus, it's not in their bible. But, as Christians, we use the Jewish bible (old testament) as if we wrote it ourselves. How fucked up is that.

Actually I'm very serious. This is fact. Please tell me you know Jews don't believe in Jesus. My point is how can you believe a book written by two different factions that don't believe in the same thing?

I know that Jews don't believe that Jesus is the Messiah, yes. :)

But as far as saying Christians use the "Jewish Bible" and they added to it as if they "wrote it themselves" is ridiculous. If you're Jewish, you know it's documented history. Why can't it be added to as events arised after that time?

So what you're saying is when Jews stop documenting things, it's over for everyone???

Oh boy, let me introduce you to my dad. My dad is Jewish my mom is Baptist. We went to Baptist church when I was growing up (Dad stayed home) because 90% of American Jews don't attend worship services so it wasn't a big deal. But, yeah, according to my dad, the book writing stopped at the old testament. The Jews wash their hands of the new testament, yes. nothing personal, just my experience.

Regardless of you or your dad's or your mom's views or loylaties to a certain church, you understand there are prophetic references from the old testament that coincide with parts of the new testament (with the "dark ages" in between those writings). Am I wrong?

Dude, lets not take this too far between the two of us okay? But, don't you think when one group said "this is the son of God" and the other said "Nope" that was a major issue between the two? And maybe the Jesus group kept adding on to the good book and the other group said no how no way? I can only say this, you will find no copy of the new testament in any synagogue on the planet. Let's leave it at that, okay?

    LOL, No offense taken. ;)

I was just about to reply that we were at that point in history where the same argument came up so it's not going anywhere since it had a 1980 something year head start.

Very few Christian faiths follow the literal word of God. The Bible is supposed to be more of a guidebook and not a verbatim set of rules. The priest/preacher is there to interpret the Bible for the people in a way that applies to their life. Where it gets complicated is how it's interpreted, of course. The Pope is going to be a bit more strict than the "Relaxed Church" that meets on Saturdays at 2pm and the priest is a young guy who likes deathmetal and has tattoos.

thadood, I get your point but does being an atheist affect your daily life? If you and your atheist buddies go to a bar, do you get harassed for being all atheisty? It's not so easy for the other groups who can't hide the fact that they're black/asian/hispanic or if two gay men/women together at a bar. A whole lot of Christian groups perpetuate this ignorance and hate towards these groups but they have no right within the faith to do so.

I wanna know what churchs you got! Here in MS/TN (by god!) it's pretty much bible = literal word or GTFO.

As for the discrimination thing, I believe the statistics were gathered with the information posed as a "1-10 rating, who would you prefer to be your senator/congressman/president?" sort of thing. You're absolutely right that you can hide being atheist. The air is full of change. It used to be "You don't talk about religion or politics!" Now, everything is voiced.

We have everything from the ecstatic evangelicals to podcasting priests in cargo shorts and sunglasses.

Liberal churches are everywhere. Less so in certain places, of course, but I would bet that there are some friendly Presbyterians and science-friendly churches in Memphis. The west coast and northern east coast are full of them as well as any big city.
