I think the one you heard about was the laptop someone was developing for kids in third world countries. This one was just announced.
512MB of ram, with a 2GB flash disk, but no details on the CPU. Given that it's running Linux it really doesn't matter. The question becomes though - with a full fledge laptop from Dell available for as little as 400 bucks, is there a market for this sort of thing? Given how limited it must be (disk space for example), I can't imagine that it would be very practical for tech geeks like ourselves. As an internet kiosk for Grandma, sure.
It seems like it'd kick ass. All I use my laptop for is browsing, IM, and dumping pictures off my camera. If I had a good job, and if it was upgradeable to run an actual HD, I'd buy it.
How about external hdd? It might not seem like a big deal in Europe or N.America but in lots of the world the difference between 200 and 400 $ could be a months salary. I see a huge market for this kind of thing.
If its light, has good battery life and wifi (oxymoron?) I'll be all over it. If I had to guess on CPU (at that price), its going to be a geode or ARM (maybe via, but I doubt it). It'd be kind of cool if they had a power 603e in there (or whatever the new version is)
It was anounced by ASUS and Intel. There's also a more expensive version with a bigger HDD (16GB). It supports Windows XP. Beats browsing the Internet on my cellphone! They're way ahead of you....
It's tiny too. Not so good battery. Not bad for $200. Here are specs from asus. What intel cpu is the question. If its a full blown x86 (p-m or w/e) than fuck it. I imagine it is with not-so-good battery. I do like the linux support however
