I'm currently ripping my 550+ DVD collection to ISO files, and trying to decide on a media player. Anybody familiar with either of these? Both are about 90 bucks and get great reviews. The ASUS has a slight edge for me right now because it support ESATA and UPNP. Going to slap a big 'ol hard drive on there and put my binders of DVDs away for good, just like I did my CDs 10 years ago. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846 http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeA...TF8&coliid=I2V6FLHVXM26H7&colid=18U0CG8WZ5DQR
I bought a WD Live HD for a friend's birthday a few weeks ago and he loves it. It will play any format.
I was looking at this myself originally, but then thought I had a void to fill (ie. playing blu-ray movies) and figure the PS3 was a better way to go. But certainly a good choice if it's just streaming.
Will it play ISO files? That ASUS is tits, for $109 shipped there's a wireless N version with lots of internet media streaming options. But yeah, PS3 is just overkill and expensive for my uses. EDIT: It runs Linux too.
MSP maybe get an atom based pc like the Revo r3610, then install XBMC, that will play anything. It will cost more than $109 but worth every bit. That's what I did.
I am waiting for Google TV software to come out, then I can make a custom box! Think about it, Google TV is open source, just like Chrom(e/ium), Chrome OS, Android, and so on. I can't wait to see the hacking community around it.
Still, reading reviews it looks like it may be the one to get. $99 shipped and 30 bucks for the wireless adapter, about the same.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136593 - Doo eet!!!! It supports ISO files and DVD navigation. I recently switched to wired on my PS3 and it flies compared to wireless G. No difference when streaming, but loading is definitely faster, almost instantaneous.
I, too, have the acer revo 3610. cheap for a dual core atom compact tiny computer. I run xbmc and use it as a mini server connected to a 65" TV. plays 1080p just fine. or if you go the mac route, get a mac mini. they would be more powerful than what i have they would be double the press. EDIT: by the way, I may be selling my revo 3610 if you are interested. i like it but i have more ideas on what to use it for so i'm looking into getting a more powerful system.
I have a friend with the WD HD. I was amazed at the formats it can play (even *.mkv) The interface looked pretty good too.
? It plays everything, I'm guessing you mean blue ray related. I had the same problem so just got a external blue ray drive. Server related stuff, I build a dual atom based server, couple of 2tb drives raid 1, mediatomb to share videos/music/pictures. Normal pc with a blue ray burner job done.
i've never played blu-rays off of it as I have PS3 for that. but i have played 1080p h.264 with no problems.
haha good times! I haven't decided for sure I am going to upgrade but we'll see. I stand by what I said in that thread that it's a great system. But I also want to do gaming so dual core atom and ION or not, it's not good enough for that.
See, I've actually got several PCs laying around and either could be used as a media device. But I'm looking for something more appliance like. And for what the WD costs it would still be cheaper than an HDMI-out video card, or at least close.
^^^ That's the non-networked version, still pretty good deal though. If I wasn't hung up on Pandora I'd probably pull the trigger on it.
Just came across this article and thought it might interest you, MSP: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3767/media-streamer-platforms-roundup
Does the roku do any kind of streaming from a PC? I set one up about 4 months ago and remember it only having netflix streaming and some other widgets for some kind of internet tv streaming and thats it.
