How to Build a Fast Air-Cooled Quiet PC

Case: Lian Li PC60USB

Since the system needs to run quiet, we suggest the Lian Li PC60 USB. The PC60 is a beauty and constructed of all aluminum. Since it is constructed of all aluminum, it dissipates heat from the inside faster then traditional metal cases. The PC60 USB can be found on Pricewatch for around $144 without power supply.

Power Supply

Since the PC60USB doesn’t come with a power supply, we suggest the use of Quiet PC’s Ultra Quiet 300W PSU. This power supply is approved by AMD for use with Athlon XP’s up to 1900+. The kicker about this PSU is that it produces less then 26dba of noise! This makes it perfect for a silent PC. More information on this PSU can be found on Quiet PC’s web site.

Case Fans: Panaflo 80MM Low Output

Even though the PC60 USB comes with 3 fans, the stock fans are designed for performance. To keep the noise level down, we suggest replacing all the stock fans with Panaflo 80MM low output fans. Panaflo has been known for producing high quality fans that operate very quietly. The Panaflo 80MM low output move 24CFM of air at 1900RPM and produce only 21dba of noise. These fans are relatively cheap and can be had for $11.99 from our friends at Heatsink factory.

Alternative: Remove all fans

Though this is not suggested, you could remove all the fans for quietness. This can lead to overheating and is not suggested.

Conclusion

Following those steps, you should end up with a PC that will give you high fps in the latest games and still be virtually silent. The ending result should be a fast computer that has a noise level of around 30dba. Producing a low noise level, you should be able to sleep well without hearing the noise of 7000RPM Delta fans. :O)
