Some of them are very extravagant but don’t offer anything in terms of cooling. Some of them look good but do a bad job. It’s important to pay attention to what’s important and watch out for what’s not. Even some of the most boring looking heatsinks like the one pictured above can do an amazing job of cooling. You’ll also want to also pay attention to feature-combinations on a heatsink. Sometimes manufacturers combine different methods all into one heatsink. Some have embedded heat pipes inside them that help transfer heat. Some combine copper and aluminum, while some even open up like a fan. Keep in mind that a heatsink isn’t a device meant to look good. It has a job to do and make sure you obtain one that can do the job right. Don’t Over Spend Your Money! There’s a difference between cooling and smart-cooling. Don’t spend your money cooling things that don’t need to be cooled and don’t overspend your money on something that’s already adequately cooled either. Spend your money with some amount of thought. I find that a lot of people dump their entire wallet on extravagant cooling schemes to keep their processors from dying. However, before its life ends, the processor will be replaced already. Is there a huge difference between sitting at 50C and spending money to bring your processor down to 25C? Sure there is, but is it worthwhile in the long run? Probably not. Bringing a processor’s to temperatures between 35C to 40C when idle is great. Hovering around 50 when your system is busy is a good temperature to stay at too. The lower the better of course but there’s a point where if you go any lower, you’re not improving anything. If you’re an avid overclocker, then you’ll want to go as low as possible. But like I said, even if your processor is overclocked, hovering around the temperatures I mentioned above is fantastic. Aiming for freezing temperatures is really a waste of money and time. Cool smart and cool effectively. It feels pretty bad when you’ve found out that the insane heatsink you’ve just purchased performs only as well as the next guy’s ordinary heatsink. Thanks go out to The Heatsink Factory for supplying the Alpha PAL6035 and the Vantec FCE-6254OD. They have some great stuff over there including new rounded IDE cables to help improve air flow inside your case. ![]() Click above for heatsinks and rounded cables! They also have new heatsinks available that you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else. They’ll also help you cool smart. Check them out as new things ship in almost everyday.
