The metal cap on the top is a heat spreader and if you somehow remove it, it’ll look like a socket A Athlon underneath with a flip chip core. I’m surprised that not even a heatsink was included for the northbridge because it becomes extremely hot during operation. For safety measures, it would be beneficial to outfit the northbridge with an active cooling solution. Important to note, is that the Thunder K7 will only support registered DDR modules. This means you can’t use regular DIMMs on this board. Registered DIMMs are taller than regular DIMMs and have extra chips at the bottom of the modules. These chips help the board address larger DIMM modules. ![]() Obviously if you’re an early adopter, you’ll be facing some upgrade issues with finding the right power supply and memory. Currently there are two power supply manufacturers that actually produce the power supplies with the correct spec for use with the Thunder K7. NMB and Delta (the fan manufacturers) are currently the only two companies that have the right power supply. I suspect that there won’t be many more companies producing these power supplies because it looks like Tyan will be the only company producing a motherboard like the Thunder K7. Most companies will try to stick to ATX specifications. |
