    Anybody have tips? I thought I knew what I was doing, but its been a while, and apparently i've been driving stick wrong all years

    (i basically ride the clutch until the car rolls, then give it gas)

    I coordinate the slip of the clutch with the accelerator for a nice smooth operation from stop to rolling. Using the clutch as little as possible for the least amount of time.
    I never leave my foot on the clutch pedal.

    no, like just moving the car by slipping the clutch, as in just letting off the clutch and whatnot to get it rolling, then giving it some gas

    My rule is if the clutch is partially pressed, I shouldn't be pressing the gas. If the clutch is all the way in or all the way out, gas away.
    That's the best way to prolong the life of the clutch. The more you see someone slip it with gas, the faster you'll wear it out.

    On high end cars you don't even want to touch the gas till the car's moving. Otherwise you'll wear out a $5000 clutch etc.

    And don't shift fast and bang it into gears. Shifting fast is the least effective and most costly way to try and go faster.

    not mashing the gears at all, was just wondering, i guess i was doing it wrong then

    so the proper way is full disengage (clutch pedal down all the way) hold gas, and pull off slowly?

    No - use as little gas as necessary to get moving. Once you're moving and your left foot is completely off the clutch pedal floor it all you want.

    not everything will launch easily, if at all, with no throttle applied, especially if you're on something other than flat ground or pointing downhill.

    the 92 2.3 ranger i putt around in has 3.45 rear gears IIRC(3.73 were optional), and while i can launch it on flat ground with no throttle reliably, the clutch needs slipped a LOT more than if i start giving it throttle about halfway through the friction point. no throttle, i spend...... almost a full second feathering the clutch out to keep it from stalling, but with throttle, noticably less than half of that time.

    for comparison, nearly anything diesel powered in the hands of the general public can accelerate up to maybe 30MPH without ever touching the "throttle", just from upshifting when possible. it's also pretty difficult to stall them, even if you just dump the clutch at a standstill.

    Honestly it just takes practice, I'm not really sure how to give a good explanation because it's something that you have to get the feel for.
    From a stop, if the car idles at say 750rpm, I start letting the clutch out without giving gas and once the clutch engages (you can feel it), the car will barely start to creep then I give it a little gas so the revs to go just over 1000. Then let the clutch out more, give more gas as needed.
    For switching between gears, clutch in, shift, clutch out, and when the clutch is almost completely disengaged I give just a little gas so it's smooth and the car doesn't jerk.

    Let the clutch out slow, don't be in a hurry, you'll be able to get faster with it as you improve. Being that you're Asian you already have the driving natural force working against you here. If you drive around for an hour or so you should have it down. Good luck. Just don't run over any Taco Bell signs in the process.

    man some people are still pissed at me for running it over!

    hmm upshifts and downshifts are relatively simple, its just first and reverse thats giving me a hard time, going to patch up the header leak (bad gasket) and i'll practice some more without getting sick.. i cant really do that creep motion at a stop sign

    Hopefully the sign wasn't owned by the mafia. If people are still mad about that, that's the only possible reason. I'd take shelter in Idaho if I were you, before it's too late.
    First and reverse are the same process, no? You'll get the creep motion as you drive more. Nobody on the Internet is really gonna be able to help you. Practice, yo. It must be that Asian anti-driving gene that's fucking with you. Go to the doctor, see if they have some pills for that.
