So I'm slowing down in my car today for a stop sign and I'm downshifting into first. I have the clutch pressed all the way down and I'm holding the shifter right where it should just ease in when the syncros match up, after holding it almost until I stopped I finally forced it into gear which made a lovely grinding sound. It's not the first time I've had problems shifting with this car. It's a 2008 Toyota Corolla with 76K miles on it. Any thoughts?
I take it this is not the normal behavior for this transmission....Check clutch adjustment, fluid level if hydraulic clutch, maybe. Any problems shifting into other gears? Or you can wait until fully stopped to downshift into first..
try switching to a nice tranny fluid like redline/amsoil and it may help a little, but i think your synchros may be on their way out btw you downshift into 1st alot? i only use it for parking and basically getting started to move
I don't recommend downshifting to first while you're moving unless you rev match and even then only at very low speeds, and rarely. How fast were you going during this downshift? Any other issues other than this?
I'm talking 5mph. I've had problems with it shifting into other gears before. I took it to the Toyota dealer and they couldn't replicate it... I got the transmission fluid changed though.
same boat as you, my 5th gear synchro and bearings are on their way out :/ whats so bad about a corolla clutch?
