So my 5th gear has been intermittently grinding, and today i did about a 600 miles drive, and it got worse... goes away sometimes, and i think it does it less when i double clutch but yeah clutch pedal is all the way down, and it still grinds so would that be how a bad syncro feels like?
This is more likely than a bad synchronized gear. Edit: herp derp reading. And where did you drive 600 miles to?
I wouldn't be surprised if its a synchro. It's very common to damage these if people shift too fast or sloppy over time. Most transmission issues are synchro related and usually most evident in a particular gear shift. Test the clutch engagement: Put the car on a flat surface and put it in first gear. Push the clutch all the way down. If the car rolls forward with the pedal in, it could be clutch hydraulics (master/slave cylinders) or adjustment (i think most modern cars do not have adjustable clutch pedal). If it is hydraulics you'd probably also feel an extra soft clutch pedal or it wouldn't have pressure until mostly pressed. It's also possible the clutch is damaged (pressure plate straps bent etc) if someone abused the car but you'd probably have issues in more than just 5th gear.
hmm a mitsubishi mirage, no i haven't only the clutch pedal position 600 miles roundtrip, around 300 there and 300 back to go skydiving, LA to like SLO yeah i bought the car from a derp who made because racecar excuses for everything.. as far as engagement, it runs fine but sometimes it feels like the hydros are a little out of whack, last time i bled it, it was giving me bubbles for a good 3 hours.. but it feels firm and my car has an adjustable clutch pedal, just some little screw mechanism
So basically your car was beat to fuck by the previous owner. If it only does it in 5th and not the other gears, goes away if you double clutch, then yeah I'd say you have a bad synchro buddy. If it does it in all gears, then it'd be time to start looking at your clutch system.
only 5th, when its over 3200 rpms but yeah, the previous owner did beat it to shit, by next year i plan on doing a swap and rebuilding nope, some kid who loved to kiss guardrails.. biggest mistake buying this car
A swap?! Oh geez. This guy: http://www.lilevo.com/ went all out with his Mirage. I've talked to him a few times, pretty cool guy. Definitely have to devote yourself to finishing the project once you start sinking all of that money into a POS '90 Mirage though. Otherwise... you end up with a broken $10,000 '90 Mirage.
