Really? Thanks for that. I'm serious about this but my ideas do sound terrible and heinous. It's just the opposite of what is reported but I will be as factual as I can. If we just leave Afghanistan the repercussions will be catastrophic to not only us but, anyone else that treats women the way our society does, educates the way we do and, helps the poor in other countries the way we do. The Taliban will rise up and become even more powerful than they were 8 years ago. I don't understand it but our society treats this religion with kid gloves and they could be our downfall if we don't wake up!! I don't fault all Muslims but, they have done practically nothing to help the rest of the world against the radical factions of their religion. They only seem to pour out in numbers when they feel insulted not..........NOT when some idiot or group of idiots from their religion has killed or tried to kill people. Maybe a spokesman will speak to the press but that's it. IMHO, bomb the living shit out of the region. Annihilate it completely. In this instance, I sincerely believe it is "Us or Them." We didn't just fuck ourselves......everyone will feel the effects.
That will only momentarily make you feel good. You will face the same problem, multiplied ten-fold, the day after, when you replace Kim Jung Il as the head of the Axis of Evil, and the "Us vs. Them" places everyone else on the Planet in the "Them" category. You could kiss all those overseas military bases goodbye in one stroke, and China could demand you pay back all those debt obligations you owe them, while they replace our presence everywhere, with their hands-off, business-only style of foreign relations. Look for huge price hikes as we are put on the receiving end of the style of sanctions we've pushed through elsewhere, while your at it.
Yeah, what he said. I, not for a moment, believe that any country will make the USA fall before we make it fall on our own. Most advanced civilizations implode from divisions corruption and greed. I see a: check! check! check! Around two centuries is the limit for our type of society. We have not much time.
This is quite an up to date documentary on the situation. Well worth checking out if your interested. It covers a lot ground, including much of what's being discussed in this thread. focuses on what military escalation will achieve in Afghanistan. YouTube - Afghanistan + More Troops = Catastrophe (Full Video) looks at how the war could further destabilize a nuclear-armed Pakistan. YouTube - Here's Why Obama Is "Gravely Concerned" About Pakistan focuses on the staggering costs of the war, which could easily exceed $1 trillion. YouTube - Rethink Afghanistan (Part 3): Cost of War examines the civilian casualties caused by recent U.S. airstrikes in Afghanistan. YouTube - Rethink Afghanistan (Part 4): Civilian Casualties questions the assumption that war can liberate Afghan women. YouTube - Rethink Afghanistan (Part 5): Women of Afghanistan brings you three former high-ranking CIA agents explaining why there is no "victory" to be won in Afghanistan. YouTube - Rethink Afghanistan (Part 6): Security
Could you explain why it is that you think they will become more powerful? I'd like to hear how you envision things playing out if troops were to be pulled out. I've heard people make assertions that are nearly opposite to your own, and I've found their arguments to be quite convincing. They make the case that much of Taliban's strength comes from civilians (men) whose families have been killed by American Bombs. These men join the Taliban. Not because they actually believe what the Taliban believe, but because the Taliban exists, is organized, and happens to share their goal (which is to drive the occupying forces out of the country, thereby stopping bombings and civilian casualties). It's a matter of convenience. They just happen to have a common enemy so they join the Taliban. What happens when that enemy is gone? Will these civilians continue to fight with the Taliban once they achieve their goal? It's a tough call. I could see the existing generation of Taliban continuing on, but as far as new recruits go I just don't see it. In theory civilians will no longer be driven to join the Taliban, because their families are no longer being killed. Taliban numbers will dwindle to the levels that existed pre-invasion. It'll be back to square one... not necessarily worse. At least that's how I'm picturing it playing out atm, based on what I've read and heard. I'm sorry, but it's just not clear what you're getting at here. I understand you have a problem with what you see as oversensitiviy, and lack of condemnation, but I don't know what point you're making with regards to the Taliban. You feel the failure of non-Taliban Muslims to speak out again the Taliban is doing what? What more can a person do but live their own life? Just because you're a father doesn't make you accountable for the sins of deadbeat dads. Should I really expect you to march in protest, speak out on television etc for actions that are out of your control. I'm sure you would, but does that mean you should? Or must?
Leave and send in the waffle bike brigades!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-aKtmAfeRg Just saying.... ...makes about as much sense as the other two options.
I say we just put a huge assed wall around the whole region. evac all outsiders and give the various factions a supply of nukes. let them anihilate themselves and then we can all breath easier. I kid, but there really isn't an answer for their problems that we need to figure out. I believe that we need to negate the need (as in "work on our problem") for the region's natural resource and bug out.....let them solve their own conundrum.
