It's just rhetoric, and not even state sponsored rhetoric. Think Douglas MacArthur, who publically said the same sort of thing about the Chinese 50 years ago. This doesn't make me more nervous at all.

No rational nation would use nukes. But one ruled by a madman or religious zeal would. Yeah, I'm talking about you North Korea and Iran.
I could see Iran or North Korea hitting the US and Japan respectively, both sponsored by Russia and China. That way we can't do anything to them in retaliation. We probably just need a policy that says if Iran or NK strike either Japan or the US with nukes then China and Russia will meet the same fate.
Could be wrong but I don't see Iran being dumb enough to launch Nukes at anyone, even Israel. It is understood NK is ruled by someone with mental illness but the press doesn't report this.

Use the search function for more info. BTW, if North Korea or Iran used nukes against the US, we would not respond with nukes. We would invade. Use the search function for that as well. Pretty sorry state of affairs, but we started down this path almost 40 years ago, and things have only gotten worse as US weapons technology has improved and replaced stomach and reason in political policy.

Yeah, nobody thought 16 Islamo whackjobs would hijack planes and crash them into buildings loaded with civilians, but they did. I certainly didn't think I'd be seeing people actually blowing themselves up just to kill some Jewish children in buses and cafes, and then being applauded for it, but it happened and seems to be more popular these days. I think a nuclear suicide would fit right in with the acts we've seen up to now, gotta inflict the most casualties possible for "revenge." Perhaps they would believe allah would protect them from retaliation. Then we must remember the official Iran military parades, as I've pointed out before, where the missles were draped with banners saying "crush America" and "wipe Israel off the map." They could do the thing where they denotate one above America at a certain height in order to create an emp blast that disables our electrical infrastructure. Then we're in the pioneer times again. If you can remember when the Ohio powerstation went out and the problems that caused in New York, whew.
I don't even know why the States wants to get involved. Taiwan was never recognized as an independant country by China... they're lucky they've been this free so far. This would be one of Bush's dumbest decisions yet... and I hope China invades and takes over 2 states as a reminder... wait... no I don't... they're probably takeover Western Washington and open the border with Vancouver... :? Dammit...
Mutually assured destruction died during the first half of the 60s before the term had been coined iirc. For the past 40 years our government just lied to us that Russia/USSR and China couldn't survive a nuclear counter attack by the US. And managed to convince the rest of the free world, too, by fabricating an entire culture around the lie that duped the popular, scientific, and even military communities. If China suffers a nuclear threat they go into blast shelters (not fallout shelters). If the US suffers a nuclear threat our population and industry stands on the surface to be washed away. Not to mention that Russia/USSR has had an effective two-tiered ballistic missile interceptor system for the past 40 years and they started illegally expanding the system outside of Moscow to other key targets around the country during the 1990s. While we screw around with “hit-to-kill” technology at $100MM per shot.
My concern is that, if they launch their nuke, well just shoot it down no problem, but if it detnates in the atmosphere, in the atmosphere over africa persay, that would just be so devestating to the earth :\
