If I have 2 PC's in the house both running XP and one of them has a webcam...can I activate and use the webcam from the other PC?
I'd try Remote Desktop first. It's built into the OS (aka free), and I've had decent luck with it. We've got a PC at work set up to monitor the security cameras, and my clients can Remote Desktop into it and the video is surprisingly fluid on a 10/100MB network.
You can do this with the Windows Media Encoder, I do it all the time: Stream a Webcam with WME | Computer Advice
It gives me an error of: "the network domain/workgroup does not contain any Terminal servers." Don't stress over it - I was just trying to learn something new... I'll try Jokers suggestion....
There's the easy option of network webcams, they're cheap and easy to set up. Most cams are heading in that direction, neat stuff, when the rez and signal gets better, I want to get one. I gotta find out if it's been the cats stealing my snacks.
I got the Encoder installed and set up...but I can't seem to open it from anywhere else..... I opened the 8080 port in my firewall.... and I have no idea how to open it in the router itself.....It only give me an option for specific programs and range of ports....but I don't know what to put in it....
you need to go to system properties > advanced and enable remote desktop on the machine w/ the camera first. then when you run RDC give it that machine's hostname
I figured it out.... I finally got it to work!!!! There is about a 10 second delay though...which really isn't a big deal. I'mma gonna have some fun with this new info I learned!...
