i got a virtual private network running on my computer, and have a friend connected to it.

He cannot view my shared files, and i cant view his.

he also cannot join or see any of my lan games.

i also cannot have more than one person connected at once.

Isnt a VPN supposed to have the capabilities of a normal LAN connection?

It should. I have no experience setting one up, but I have one that I use for school and I have all the abilities that you are talkin about.

Are you in the same workgroup? Because I know that makes a difference.

Also who makes the VPN you are using, I use a cisco version.

i believe thats a limitation in windows xp vpn

you would need windows server to do more.

I've never used vpn but does vpn just give you access to network shares over the internet securely?

Why wouldn't you use a secure ftp connection?

    http://www.smartftp.com/features.php

It seems like it would be less work and more secure since you could really limit what your users can access and change. Plus it would allow multiple users.

because the original intent of my idea was to be able to play games over lan, not just share files

However we've seen that lan games over VPN = shitty ping so I suggest just making an open server with password ?:)

Yeah...the only time i've ever seen a vpn with a decent ping time was with a dedicated wins server.
