If you are a geek and haven't played with this yet, go do so now. real virtualization is the shit, its so much faster than the old bochs/qemu stuff. I'm setting up a development/test server right now, just using server w/ about 10 snapshots of windows running at once. And I can work in linux at work now for whenever I'm not doing work related stuff w/ the virtual machines. They have so much cool stuff you can download too. I'm going to set my home server up as just a bunch of virtual machines for all the services. Nice sandbox enviroment. Seriously, this stuff is incredible. Oh, and its free, don't bother pirating it =p The ESX server is the only one that costs money, but its a lot different (we have one running here), it has its own kernel, its kind of an OS. more like a scheduler though. the regular server will run on top of windows/nix update: I currently have a copy of winxp running, ubuntu also, and centos-bq is installing (the "successor" from the cobalt qubes/sun raqs)
I just use MS Virtual PC that was recommended in my VM thread months back. It serves my purposes just fine. I specifically like how I can mount ISO's on the fly to get an instant linux environment.
well tex Im sure youre aware of Parallels for osx, which cant be matched for that os. On the nix side, most people use opensource vm servers, I cant name them off the top of my head, but its definitely changing the way any business oriented computing happens.
I'm digging vmware because of how many appliances there are at the moment. I don't really use my mac anymore except as a glorified jukebox, otherwise I'd probably have parallels to mess around with.
Virtual PC 2007 is now available for free as well. Now, I have a question. With VMware Player, after I download and run an appliance, say, Ubuntu, can I update it as I would the real thing?
yeah. I have an install of arch i keep on my usb key between work and home. you can't do snapshots with player at all.
