Well, since my mom's beetle is in the shop for a bit while the VW dealer orders some parts for the rear driver-side window (it won't go up), they offered to pay for an Enterprise car rental. Now, we really don't need a rental as we have two other cars, but we figured.. what the hell, it's free. We now have a 2008 Chevy HHR with only 30 total miles on it.

Ever since they came out, I know my dad has been in love with them. Personally, I thought they were just like the Chevy version of the PT Crusier. I was surprised at how badass the thing is. The interior is quite nice, pretty good sound system and comfy seats. I don't know if it's just me, but it looks like on the '08 models they did some changes here and there. The above picture is an '05 if I'm not mistaken. They look a lot cleaner and sharper now.

Anyway.. I guess this was a useless post. In summary.. they're not as fucking ugly and gross as one would imagine. I still couldn't imagine owning one. I miss the beetle.

    +1

I've driven a few HHR rentals, and my experience has been they are under powered! And what's up with Chevy setting the electric window controls on the center console and so far apart? Try dropping all four windows at once with one hand, it's a bitch. Are they the same in the 2008?

Otherwise the styling and interior comforts were nice. I'd take one over a PT Cruiser any day, but I'd get the most powerful engine they offered.

Yup, the window controls are still in the middle console. That's a pretty shady place to put 'em; my parent's couldn't figure out how to open the windows.

Not sure about the motor though, it felt like it had some decent kick. Then again, I haven't driven it yet (this is the 2nd day we've had it), so I'll let you know then. My parents keep hogging it.

And yeah 'teg, it was the one in Stratford. I guess that's because it's the closest one to Curran Volkswagen. When my dad got hit in the Civic last year, we ended up going to the Shelton Enterprise and getting a GMC pickup that smelled like cheap (African American) cologne. We had the thing for over a month and the smell never went away. We lucked out this time.

Edit: Is that where you worked?

The Pontiac Torrent has the same headlight switch configuration, and it makes it difficult for both the driver and the passenger to lower the windows.

But we had fun with our HHR rentals. I just drove mine fast, my buddy Terry would deliberately curb the vehicle, etc. Personally I think that's not cool. Rental or not you shouldn't tear up a car that isn't yours.

Little bump.. as I finally got to drive it.

At 5'8", I should not be too tall for a vehicle like this, but the way the windshield curves, it makes it impossible to look up at a traffic light without hunching yourself over. Maybe that's just my big ghetto booty, I dunno. ;) There are blind spots out the wazoo and the view from the rear view mirror is a joke. It's just really dark for some reason.

It drives very smoothly (of course, it's brand new), but I felt like there should have been a little more 'oomph' in the acceleration. But then again, what the fuck do I know?

It looks like a rounded out scion. I'd much rather have the scion though. Something about them I just like.

HHR's remind me of the old forty's station wagons. Too retro and they're just trying to cash in on the success of the PT cruiser.
