Depressed people in Seattle? No way! More here: Survey: Average gamer is 35, fat and depressed - Games - msnbc.com
a few more years and my brother could fit into this study, hes 23, about 100 pounds over weight, depressed, and plays WoW 26 hours a day.
Well I like how it was Seattle area only. Only 500~ people. The fact is, if you look at any game playing, the average is a 35 year old house wife. Not just hardcore gamers play games anymore. Peggle is a game. Hell there are a shit ton of women playing Wow, but not only that the other website based games. Blah, stupid generalized studies. Just because I am almost 35 (in 9 years), fat, and bummed the fuck up doesn't validate anything!!!!
man, they need to make everyone live in lubbock tx for a year. it rains maybe 6 or 7 times a year. i love it when it rains now. it could rain all teh damn time and i wouldnt get sick of it
Doesn't surprise me at all. Any activity that can regularly consume vast amounts of time alone is bound to attract the depressed recluses, and of course they're going to be fat from lack of exercise.
It rains in Seattle, stay the fuck away from my city! The question is still do they game because they are fat, or are they fat because they game?
That fact is that the majority of gamers are social and not recluses. Just look at xbox live, or wow, or any online service/game. Of course there are recluses, but it is not the majority or at least not the status quo. I prefer to play games online or with other people, single player games suck most of the time imo. I'd rather have my brother over and we play a sp game together trading off.
Going to a bar with 50 other people but only sitting by yourself = not social, but you would consider them more social because they are around other people physically. I agree that online interactions cannot replicate physical interactions, but that doesn't mean they are any less meaningful or have less potential. In its own unique way online interactions can be more personal and build better friendships than you could in person because a lot of our built in social hijinks don't get in the way.
Aside from having a pretty odd/small sample, I really think we're on the cusp of that demographic changing drastically. At this point, I don't know any males who don't play video games in my age range. Hell, most girls at this point dabble a bit.
the "age thing" with gaming in the media these days really pisses me off. if youre in your late 20's early 30's then you grew up in the time of gaming revolution, atari, magnavox, nes, pong, arcades.. so im pretty sure its normal for a 30 something to still be into gaming. the media makes it out to be a sad embarrassing thing to be in your 30's gaming. hell we grew up with that shit, get over it! obese? not surprising as most obese people are already house ridden from birth, already non active, and this is the perfect recipe for their already mundane non-mobile lifestyle. get over it! depressed? what a joke. depression is a far underlying problem than gaming. not to mention how many of those men THOUGHT they were depressed. come the fuck on.
It stands to reason. When you are suffering from true depression, any escape is what'll draw you in. gaming is a real good example of "escape" when not done in moderation. i haven't been suffering a deep depression yet this year, and guess what? i haven't gamed nearly as much. i've devoted a lot more time actually being productive and getting shit done. The estimation seems valid to me.
Gamers fat losers? No waiiiiii! <-- 23m, 6'3" 200lbs, plays two hours to six hours depending one what's going on. I'll drop it if my family needs anything though. e: I don't touch MMOs. You fags can keep that poopsocking bullshit.
