What's the outcome if the sarge is found inocent due to lack of evidence? http://www.reuters.com/article/2012...20120321?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&rpc=76 This may just well be where the real differences between Mid East an West reach a climax.
Honestly, I don't think it's going to make a lick of difference. The "war on terror" in afghanistan was a sham, and as long as the radical islamists are there to whip up the stupid, idiot masses of brainless morons, that place is going to be as uneasy as my gut after a night of spicy food.
And we're more than capable of giving them fuel for their fire. I'm just wondering what the world is going to be like if a hotshot legal team earns their fee and gets this soldier off on a technicality or if the sarge is found innocent under our legal system. We in the west would understand, or at least be used to the legal shenanigans that regularly take place here. Will the Middle east have the same response? I certainly wouldn't want to be on deployment over there right now. The legal system is stating that this could be a 2+ year proccess. It's not going to be too copesetic with a society hell bent on instant revenge now, is it?
Frankly I was pretty pissed when I found out they had flown him out of Afghanistan. This is one of those cases where you accidentally let the locals storm his holding cell and drag him away.
Yeah, now it's a real powderkeg for sure. Couple that with the "accidental" burning of the quaran and they're feeling mighty justified in lyching everyone in sight. yay team!
Eeeeeh. I understand the "let the barbarians have him" mentality but don't think someone should be subjected to that sort of legal system. Besides, he's going to have a lot more "fun" as a child killer in our prisons.
I hear yah. But for that sort of crime, where the guilt of the suspect is certain, why undermine our mission over such a scumbag? This guy actually went to school a few blocks from my office... aranoid:
This is what I meant by: "differences". The idea of justice over there is totally different than what we should be. While I believe that this soldier should be garanteed the same due proccess that any American should expect, the Afghaniis aren't going to see it that way no matter what. He's already tried, convicted and all that's left to do is torture and humiliate/kill him in public, so far as the Afghans are concerned. IMHO: there is no fixing this quagmire we got ourselves into. It's a no-win for both sides.
