How about just a standard sound card and adding a headphone amp? Cheaper, portable, etc.

i really dont want to get into mobile headphone amps right now because...
    just TOO many fucking choices!
and they all apparently sound different, and have different reviews

i think i could end up buying lots of the diff headphone amps as a hobby, and i see myself wasting more money. i just want a sound card with built in and forget about it.

unless you got a website with hq cheap mobile amps, then i might take a gander.. but uhhhhhh... yea.

Haha! I am kind of in the same boat. I have a pair of sennheiser cans that I want to use with a headphone amp but like you said there's so many with varying reviews. I am not to worried about it really because the on-board sound on my Asus P8Z68 board is not bad at all. It sounds much better than my old system that had an old ass Audigy2 platinum.

High end audio is like a lot of other hobbies, lots of snobbery and opinions based on perception rather than quantifiable results. I'm sure you'd be happy with the onboard audio, and certainly using a headphone amp. I say give one a try. Buy local, so if you aren't satisfied you can just return it.
