so, I've got a sony KDL40s5100, basic barebones model, the firmware is updated, the warranty is expired and I am fairly savy with electronics so I will not be calling a repairman. is anyone here familiar with television repair? I've been having difficulties with my television lately, sometimes the hdmi ports wont work or sometimes the audio drops (whether I'm using tv speakers or external audio through optical cable). sometimes it requires me to turn off the television, sometimes it requires me to completely unplug it from the outlet. if I replace the main unit board http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-KDL-40S...ht_1151wt_1164 will it fix these problems? technically it would be a whole different television wouldn't it?? thanks in advance to whoever helps me!
i would def splurge on that main board. there appears to be two boards on the lcd, the power board and that main board. if you can get that board for 55 and its guaranteed to work, i'd do it. dunno if there will be alignment issues afterwards though. dunno if main boards and lcd alignments are specd from the factory to match both components.. or maybe it'll be something you can adjust if that ends up being an issue
why would there be alignment issues if they are the same part? what's the possibility that it wouldn't align with the current power board?
With shipping the part is $68, frankly I would put that money towards a new set. The reasons are many. The part might not fix the problem. Even if you succeeded, you'd still have a functional older LCD TV. Aka slow refresh, lower contrast, lower brightness, probably not LED... 70 bucks towards a bigger, newer screen makes more sense to me. Particularly when TVs are so cheap these days.
why would it not fix the problem though? I dont want to trash the tv. 70 dollars is not an expensive repair but I would like some more explanation on how the television works. I'm perfectly content with a 60hz 40" 1080p tv, the tv looks stellar and it only has a 8ms delay, a lot of newer tvs have so many filtering processes that a lot of them have 34-64ms delay (unless you spend well over 2 grand), some of the 3d led LGs have terrible delay and I play a lot of fighting games so I need something that relatively keeps it below 16ms. $70 repair > $700-$3000 for an upgrade.
Just a matter of preference I guess. I look at consumer electronics is accountant terms: how much has the item depreciated in value, how much is replacement cost compared to repair, and what features do the replacement options have over the broken item I have now? To me it's not worth 70 bucks to repair, just personal preference. Especially when you can get a bigger/better/warranted display in the $500 range. And you wouldn't need to trash the old display. If only the HDMI portion is failing you could sell it on Craigslist for $100-200, folks would just use the component interface. Hell, that's a good point. Why not just switch to component and optical audio?
Replace whatever board the HDMI and Sound is on. The cheap sets use really (REALLY!) port components that only last 6 months or so. Changing out boards is as easy as building a computer only the ribbon cable connectors are a bit more fragile. Just put it together with the right ribbon going to the right connector in the right orientation and it'll be a snap.
