lol. ive fell off the reddit bandwagon long ago ever since karma whoreing became extreme and if you miss one 30 minutes of "reddit time" you miss out on 30 inside jokes. so theyre thinking of purchashing an island and starting their own civilization or technopia society reddit not only drawns in ppl with skills and talents, but also draws in ppl with money, so something like this i wouldnt be surprised actually happen http://gawker.com/5932987/reddit-is...ne-community-create-a-nerd-oasis-in-real-life http://www.reddit.com/r/redditisland
great idea. I'm in. [/optimism] There's only one drawback. An isolation society like that will still suffer from the same human character defects of sloth, greed, envy and lust that created the fuctup world that would be outside of that island. Eventually it'd be just another US on a smaller scale regardless of any constitution or charter. Treating the symptom and not the cause is only a temporary fix to any problem. [/scepticism]
Yes, the idea has some major hurdles, but the author of that article sounds like the worlds biggest douche. This is actually the first I've heard about this and I think it's quite interesting. Honestly, if land can be found, bought and developed without major interference from the host nation, and there is some investment, something like this could actually work. I mean, all over the world there are small self sustaining communities of people and hell, that is how humanity lived for thousands of years before modern civilization, this is just a new group of people trying to do the same thing. I have no idea if this group has the ability to actually pull it off, but it's certainly not impossible
I was thinking something along the same lines: "frito-lay stocks are going to soar!" The same may hold true when/if pot is legal in 6 states after a vote in Novemeber.
Reddit is amusing and can be informative, but there are some people who literally spend all day and all night on it. Crazy.
