Ha! I remember driving past that sign back in 2006. We were touring around Arizona and my wife said "He, let's cross over into Mexico". I knew all about Reynosa and wasn't even going to suggest it, but since she did I said "Sure!" We weren't over there more than 30 minutes, it was as bad as you can imagine. Just parking the rental car on the American side somebody tried to charge me for protection money. "It's a rental car, knock yourself out..." It was fine when we returned. :)

There's not much south of the border I'd care to see bad enough to go.

Nidex summed it up pretty well... the war on drugs is a big reason for this happening... and such a shame because Mexico seems like such a beautiful place.

But...but...but, the war on drugs circulates a lot of cash:

    ?
Reynosa is across the Rio Grande from McAllen, Texas... probably a good 1000 miles from Arizona. Probably a different sign MSP. :p

Damn, you're right! I went to Nogales. Reynosa was where I was supposed to travel for Siemens back in 2006 and even then they deemed it too dangerous and wouldn't let us go.

Probably for the best. With that said, thousands of people spend time on both sides of the border (Laredo/Nuevo Laredo, San Diego/Tijuana, Mexicali/Calexico, Nogales/whateverthefuckistheretoolazytolook, El Paso/Juarez) every day... many work in one country and live in another and do so without incident. Also, many Americans in border towns do their dental/medical/shopping in Mexican border towns, again, without issue.

The general idea of avoiding crime (don't be involved) holds true for the most part, just like in American ghettos... only thing about Mexico is, you never know when certain "wanted" people and their hunters are where you are, all of a sudden you're shopping and the AK47s start going off in the grocery store parking lot.

i dont think theres anywhere to hide in mexico... cartels are fighting over any and every piece of available land. either for farming, selling, transport, hideouts, etc etc.
    its crazy.

Yep, a friend of mine worked on cleaning out grow ops in national forests, showed me pictures of cutting down all the plants and hauling them away with choppers and army guys. Crazy stuff, and those operations do hell to the environment as well...

I've run acrost trip wires while hunting. Too bad too. I came around a ridge and all I smelled was the sweetest buds. It made my mouth water and i haven't smoked the stuff in 25 years.
I just made sure I had a round chambered, safety off and backed away slowly.

^^^ Ditto. What were the trip wires connected to, explosives? A shotgun? That's just bullshit right there.
