I have a few years old compaq presario laptop that still runs pretty well in windows xp. Anyways, my battery is kinda of screwy after a few formats. The battery seems to immediately drop down to 65% when I unplug the power upon full charge and it seems to drain out fairly fast and automatically shuts off when the drain runs out, but I'm able to turn it back on with the battery charge showing 0 and it can run for maybe another 45 minutes. I tried doing a simple calibration process that shuts off all power management and leave the computer to drain out and shut off, then charge it back up and restore the power managent settings, but it doesn't help.
Unfortunately batteries die pretty fast. Almost all major laptop manufacturers only have 1 year warranties on their batteries for this exact reason. You can try to keep draining to completely empty then recharge to full a few more times, but I don't think it'll help much if at all. New battery seems to be a solid solution.
Yep, manufacturers (cleverly) put 1 year warranties as they barely last that long due to constant depleting and recharging. If you've fully depleted the battery and fully recharged and it still dies fast, you'll need a new one altogether. It sucks but that's how it goes
run it until its COMPLETELY dead, then let it charge completely and then some, see if that helps at all.
Yep. If you've frequently drained the battery it just accelerates the process unfortunately. One reason that I use my AC adapter whenever possible.
I thought it was a good thing to fully depete the battery before recharging fully? And always charging partially depleted batteries was a bad thing?
Nah, that was for the older battery technology. See #8: Top 15 Ways to Extend Your Laptop’s Battery Life EDIT: Found another, more clear explanation here: How to prolong lithium-based batteries
