Me too, not because it's a "laptop killer" but because it's a toy and I love toys.

My government laptop doesn't allow flash so every time I go to nhl.com only the text will load at best, sometimes it just freezes. I just went there and the entire site loaded and one of the headlines was "NHL announces NHL.com optimized for iPad. The article explains their viewer base is young upward thinking young adults. Why do I have an odd feeling all of the "plays of the day" are soon to be subscription based with it's own i-app?

Take Jobs dick and suck it. Why don't you move it a little to the left? That's right. Great.

I like the design, but there are two (really three) strikes against it.

    1) Flash - C'mon Jobs, like it or not the world is Flash.
    2) One application at a time - Who would ever want to listen to iTunes and surf at the same time?
    3) Price - I could buy TWO of my Aspire Ones for 500 bucks, and am not limited by any of Apple's bullshit.

As charming as I pad looking right now. Just wait till June, i think HP slate will come out then. Same kind of design with Atom, web cam, USB, flash support and SD card support. Also cheaper then the dam I pad, if not close to it. For me whats kills I-pad is there lack of Flash support and No multitasking.

Tablets so far have been nothing more than ultraportable laptops with a hinged touchscreen slapped on 'em. I'm kind of excited about the iPad because it's gonna open the floodgates. IMO, Android is proving to be real alternative to the iPhone, and with Google's commitment to supporting Flash... I'd get an Android-based tablet in a heartbeat! You gotta give it to Apple for innnovatin', though.

The iPad isn't even close to a laptop though. It's not a PC, MacBook, laptop, or even netbook. It's a big iPhone that you can't make calls on. I think Apple REALLY missed the mark on this one. I was expecting a touchscreen MacBook, not a huge ass iPod Touch.

It looks like a fun toy...but that's all I see it as. I can't see myself doing anything serious on it. Will I buy it, probably not. I've given enough money to apple since i bought my iphone. I don't need another reason to give them more money right now.

    This.

I'm so disappointed in Apple for releasing this garbage. Of course they had huge amounts of Apple fan-boys pushing for it but.... come on..... It's DUMB.

I'm disappointed in Leo Laporte. Before Steve officially showed off the iPad, Leo said that it couldn't just be a big iPod touch or something. Well that's exactly what it turned into but he loves the iPad for some reason. He's not really an Apple fan boy either so I'm not sure what he sees in the thing. Does it look cool? Yes. Would I take one? Yes. But like others would say, it's a toy. I don't see much of a reason for it though. I mean I could see myself using it in certain situations but I'd rather pay less or the same for a good netbook or entry level laptop that will do more.

Do any of you guys who don't want one read books frequently or read magazines frequently?

It terms of it being a netbook killer, my iphone already did that.

I got a netbook before I got the iphone so I could read/surf while in bed or laying on the couch, once I got my iphone I stopped using the netbook. Now the only thing I use the netbook for is for random things like jail breaking iphones, when I need something portable with a big enough screen to see a large pic of something on the internet (fixing cars, arcade, etc).

Like ivwshane said, they're netbook killers. Tablets are better suited at filling the gap between smartphones and "real" laptops than netbooks; their form factor makes more sense. You can display ebooks vertically or horizontally (one vs. two pages). You can sketch shit on the go instead of needing a drawing tablet connected to a laptop. And now musical apps can evolve; Reason would perfect on a tablet!

But hey, different strokes for different folks....

Here is where I am coming from.

I am a software engineer. Could I consider using this even in a pinch to do my job at all? No, not even a bit. I can't tell you how annoying it is to use the RDP apps without a keyboard and mouse [for doing anything serious]. Is a journalist going to want to use this thing to type on? No, the appeal goes away because of all the crap accessories you have to bring along, and you can't even snap a picture with it and describe what's going on. Is someone going to want to edit photos on it? I know I wouldn't ignoring the fact that all the current apps, even PS Mobile, suck. Like you said, ivanolo, sketching on it might be cool, but I have SketchDesk on my iPhone and I love the fact that it fits in my pocket. I just don't see a use for this product at all. Even the Kindle app on my iPhone is a suitable eReader. I read on my phone all the time. The first thing I do on the crapper is take out my iPhone and open a book. I am not going to take an iPad in the crapper with me. :-D

You're probably not part of the target audience, then.

Like I said: different strokes for different folks. I like having a smartphone for when I'm on the go or sitting on the crapper, but a tablet is definitely a nicer form factor. These things are tools; just pick the one or ones that are suitable for you.

Having these discussions reminds me of MS vs. Apple vs. Linux fanboys bashing each other's products....

I don't know about you j0k3r but the RDP app I use is awesome! You can use the keyboard with it just fine. Check it out, it's called iTap RDP.

But that's besides the point. The iPad is not a laptop replacement and if you currently use a netbook as a laptop replacement then I feel sorry for you as it's too slow for me to do my every day computing with it.

Think of the iPad as a multimedia device, ie for reading a news paper, book, magazine, text book, and in those situations where you are waiting or siting around for a long period of time, you can watch movies, music, and watch live tv.

I'll probably never get one but that's because I'm content with the iphone and it's smaller form factor.

I have no use for a tablet myself. If I were to spend the money, I would just get a notebook pc. I see deals for 15 inchers all over the place for a comparable price.

But if a touch tablet is what your feinding for, why not wait for the Slate? It will have a real OS, be expandable (SD slot), has a USB port, supports Flash, and has actual multitasking.
