The gears won't change on my specialized tricross. I'm a total bike noob so any advice would be appreciated.

When you attempt to change gears does the lever actually move or not? Can you see the derailer move? If you have any lengths of exposed cable are they rusted/corroded or appear to be stuck? Does it happen only on the front derailer or the back or both?

Most likely cause of your problem is a rusted derailer/broken spring in the derailer. Or even more likely, a rusted cable or stuck cable. It could also be that the end of the cable where it cinches onto the derailer just came loose and needs to be put back in place and screwed down.
