Well I upgraded my comp got evrything put together turn the comp on and WTF? no VGA signal to monitor. Hmmm what's wrong with this picture then I hear this little POP and smell something burning SHIT!!! so I shut it down fast but too late. A IC chip on the motherboard blew a hole through the top of itself (never saw that before) this caused a cascade effect which killed my hard drive and a CD drive. Now I need to find out if it took out my CPU and RAM next. Of course I didn't back-up my data LOL.

Anyway after I get her back up think I'll make a file server out of the old comp parts.

    Peace.

I meant the old motherboard, CPU (PIII 933) and RAM (384 meg SDRAM) that I replaced that's still good and will make a good file server.

Didn't back up your data? Sweet merciful Jah, Heavy-D you're too smart for that shit...

Where did you buy the motherboard? I'd make them pony up for the parts that were ruined.

You would think I was smarter than that LOL

No can do they are not liable for damage to other components. Instead of a file server think I'll get and external HDD to back stuff up on.

Yah, yah laugh it up. LOL Made some progress today found out it also toasted a sound card, CPU is OK but one stick of RAM is bad so it's RMA time.

Can anyone recommend a good UPS?

I like my APC's, I run two of them, one for the computers and one for all the shit plugged into them.

An APC system is something i've yet to incorporate. The T-storm last week had me worried. i no sooner unplugged all systems when the lightning started hitting the earth.....close call.

I suggest you get at least one UPS man. Lately we've had the power go out for a couple of minutes for no apparent reason.

Now lets get back to the continuing saga of "Heavy-D is an Idiot" :retard:
Today I did the install one stick of RAM manually set it lower install second stick and manually raise the RAM speed and it worked. We now have 2 gigs of DDR2 800 RAM. :-D

NAS stands for "network attached storage". It's simply a hard drive enclosure / server that sits on my network. And 1&1 is a web host. For 5 bucks a month I get 120GB of online storage. You really can't beat it.

I use stone tablets, myself. Engraving all those "1"s and "0"s into granite is a pain, though...

Tape backup with my old Sony Superstation was too much of a pain, so I just back up important data to CD-ROM, and reinstall from scratch for everything else.

Man I know what you mean, used to use thick sheets of wood to back-up my data. Lost that too when the termites ate it all.

I just don't trust hard drives, and optical shit is bound to get scratched, at least in my case (plus it supposedly doesn't have too great a shelf life)

Dude, don't talk shit on the ECS mobo's. My first pc build was a budget build (I was a Freshman in high school) using an old ECS motherboard. That thing was rock solid. Never had any problems with it. In fact, my cousin has it and uses it as a test platform for hardware in question.

I don't know how good they are now, but that was one hell of a board.

Handled carefully and recreated every 5 years or so and optical media is reliable. And used in addition to magnetic based media you are as safe as you can possibly be.

yeah, until my dumbass scratches it =x
most people are fine using it though probably (optical media)

for important stuff (mostly financial shit in my case) I'm using a dds4 drive at the moment (20/40gb). We had stuff at work that was 10 years old (the tapes) and it still pulled up fine
