I have a glass desk and really dislike most mousepads out there. I was wondering if I taped/masked off a square (mousepad sized) area on the reverse side of the glass and sandblasted/etched it, do you think that would be good enough for the laser from the mouse to use for tracking?
I'd imagine it would depend on your mouse's sensitivity. You could always spend $10 on a piece of glass and test it out first before maiming your desk.
Yeah, that would be the smart thing to do. I guess if the etching didn't work itself, I could also spray over it with flat grey or black paint... Off to find a piece of glass...
Both my MS mice work on my glass shelves on my TV stand, but I have the dull side up. And its black, im not sure about clear or etched, or crapple mice
Actually, I use a Logitech MX Revolution wireless mouse. Even Crapple users know Crapple mice are Crap.
Doest work. As a prelimanary test I took the booklet I'm using as a mouspad right now and placed it flat under the glass. The mouse didn't track. :\
I think either that or for some other reason it (laser) could not penetrate the glass, or maybe the optics in the mouse cant handle the miniscule amount of refraction in the glass? I dunno. The glass is only 1/2" thick...
I've heard of some laser mice working on glass, notably the gaming ones with super high dpi or resolution or whatever the fuck mice have.
I guess I'll just run a stupid mouse pad. I hate mouse pads. Mice are so mid-80's... you'd think there would be a viable option by now.... and no touchpads are not it. I'm thinking like a wrist-worn sensor that could monitior blod-flow through your arteries and veins through the wrist point. It would be a personally calibrated device. If the sensors and attached processor/program could monitor your positions and bloodflow in both directions, couldn't you possibly map single/multiple finger movements to them? I dunno... just thinking outloud here...
I feel your pain about the mousepad, haven't used one in years. Thus my desk is scratched to shit from my extreme mousing.
if youre thinking about etching your actual glass desk.. that might be a bad idea. if the etching ends up being too rough, it'll grind the hell out of your mouse pads and ruin your mouse. you might wanna opt for a mouse pad that has a reversible side for control or smoothness depending on what youre using your mouse for. im actually looking into buying a mouse pad too, so im doing alot of researching.. i agree, mouse technology shouldve been replaced or updated years ago. that biometric mousing idea sounds pretty cool. reminds me of razer's april fools ad. http://www.razerzone.com/talon
I personally think glass desks are a pain in the ass. You can see all those smudges, and then there's this problem here.
paint will rub off!!! how about taping or fastening a black mousepad UNDER your glass table?? has anyone tried that?? if that doesnt work... just buy a damn mousepad bro. i know you wanna be mr minimalistic tap dancing on glass but its not gonna work.
I don't think it will work Torx, because the distance of the thickness of the glass is too great for the sensor's range of focus. (plus, Lurker already tried that) I'm just using a piece of 8.5x14 paper taped down to my (not glass, but that doesn't matter in this example) desk with double-stick tape. As the paper gets oily from the palm of my hand, I just replace it with a new one.
oh okay. how about this? painters tape? blue painters tape., mark it, mask it, trim it. of course it could take a couple strips to get a good height/width i bought my ratpadz gs from hardocp back in 2003 i think, whenever it was first released.. its worn down so bad, theres no smoothness and its wearing down my mouse feet already. it was a great pad, was very smooth too.
What about a cutting mat? They tend to be semi-transparent but should be frosted enough for the mouse to read on. You could put the keyboard under it as well so it blends better. Only problem is they seem to be hard to find without grids, but I know they make them without the grid.
Theres some really nice frosted glass mats out there... and some aluminum mats that would look great with your setup
sticks to glass, comes in many patterns. If it doesn't float your boat, you can razor-blade it off: http://www.windowglassfilmsite.com/
