Gotta love the American War On Drugs. We are in large part responsible for this situation. (however, the name has 'war on drugs' retired, and the new head of drug policy, Gil Kerlikowske formally Seattle Police Chief, is making some good steps in the right direction)
Yeah, I've noticed. The little tiny airport and forrest service helipad/HQ two miles away, is a bee hive with federal, state and local helicopters and aircraft including ultralights and paragliders. This year there's probably twenty times the usual growing season air traffic. All are flying 200'-300' and scouring all the hills so they are definately not pleasure craft that are bound to a 1000' minimum altitude. I say just totally legalize the pot. Put them cartels out of biz.....at least when it comes to selling herb.
just to remind everyone, this shit has been going on for years now, its just starting to get a ton more media attention. We have been hearing about for a long while here. I remember in 2005 there were a bunch of kidnappings and shit in el paso. The gangs have definately become more violent, but the thing that everyone is looking at now is because they are butting heads directly at the government and blatantly killing foreigners. I have some friends that work in the Mexican government, and while its pretty bad, it isn't like the whole country is going to suddenly turn into a bunch of gang bangers pouring over the borders. One of my friends has to go to Mexico City all the time for work and she said once you get past the border its mostly ok. Last time she was in the outskirts of MC and there was a public gang-related hanging, but the violence is pretty minimal except in juarez, etc. they still need to do something. and its not for a lack of trying, calderon is definately making the effort. Like 950 said, its our fault, although I would argue its not the war on drugs, its people's love of getting fucked up. If we legalize pot it is just going to reduce the violence, not eliminate it.
Media attention? No matter what, if only one of these happened here ("public gang-related hanging") there'd be a shit ton of global media coverage. Sure there's been gang related crime at the borders for years. But it has escalated to the point where those gangs are taking on the government down there. The local authority at our southern borders are the cartels themselves. This shit is spilling over onto our soil in a big way. Media attention? I'm glad, no better time to know what's going down.
