I'm going to have to figure out if Partition Magic will split my Promise Fast Trak 2000 RAID partition. Right now it's two 40GB drives in a single stripe. I'm pretty sure it will, but I'm heading to New York in a few days and don't have time to fuck with it right now. Otherwise I'd be dual booting by now.

You won't have to have programming or scripiting knowlege to use linux. Especially ubuntu. Ubuntu is very very easy. It might seem a little weird at first (the way programs are installed and stuff) but if you use it enough it will get easier. Alothough I would suggest Kubuntu because I prefer KDE :p

Why don't you try a distro that comes with both GNOME and KDE so you can compare them directly? If you come from a Windows background, KDE will feel familiar.

Ubuntu is very easy to install and setup, easier than windows most of the time.

Learn to use the command prompt, once you learn it, many times pulling up the command prompt is much faster to fix things/modify settings than a GUI.

And get ready for TRUE multitasking.

I am running Ubuntu now. I've been Windows free for a couple days. As a programmer I wish I made the switch years ago, but this was a good time anyway. I setup Synergy on Ubuntu, then ran the client on my Mac, which uses my left monitor. Now I've got dual widescreens with MacOSX on one and Linux on the other with a single mouse/keyboard. Definitely recommended if you have both!

That's pretty neat.. you say you have two monitors.. OS X runs on both, then you can get linux to pop up on the other? Or am I getting that wrong?

No. The left LCD is running to the Mac (mini), the right LCD is running to my Opteron desktop with Ubuntu. There's no mouse or keyboard hooked to my mini. If I move my mouse off my Ubuntu's desktop to the left the cursor appears on the Mac at that point, then the keyboard outputs to the Mac. I hooked the sound to the Mac for iTunes but do most web browsing on the desktop.

Ok this may sound stupid but I seem to be doing somthing wrong.

I have burnt the iso onto a disk and in the description it says just do that and then rebot and boot from CD, I have chaged it in the BIOSn and it says boot from CD but hitting enter or any key does nothing, just skips past and boots into windows.

What am I doing wrong? Any quick answers cause i gotta go out but really wanna see what its like!

I recommend you use DVD Decrypter in ISO Write Mode. Simple as hell. If you're using Nero Burning ROM, you have to record a CD from an image. Another thing that could be causing your CD not to boot is your BIOS configuration. You have to tell it to boot from your optical drive(s) first. Check those things and get back to us.

Did you burn it as a image file, or as a data cd? you need to burn it as a image file..

ubuntu will be your best bet.
join ubuntuforums.org as well because you will have alot of questions. Search first because majority of questions you have will have been answered.

Terminal is your freind and you will have to type or copy/paste commands and scripts in to get stuff installed, configed, etc..

majority of instructions to get linux runnning the way you want is available online and tutorials all over the place on what to copy and paste, making it easy for us beginners..

what takes a full day to setup windows, install apps, takes a couple of days to do with linux. You will probably get burned out on setting it up real quick.. You will probably reformat and reinstall a couple times as well to get things just right.. Just be prepared.

What he said. If you don't burn, telling the Burner software to use ISO as it's source, but instead just burn the ISO onto a disk, it won't work. BTW, we don't mean to insult your intelligence, but just want to cover all the bases, just in case of a "did you plug it in" type error...

The bootable CD is nice, but I like the HDD install better. Every evening I open the case and unplug one HDD to plug in the other. :D
