Apparently I've been away from Linux for a while, Ubuntu isn't the #1 distro anymore? Anybody else using Mint?

I've got it loaded on my Netbook and so far I'm impressed. The only negative is they really go out of their way to keep folks from using Google. Had to manually add Google as a search provider, including a description of why I shouldn't use it. Same deal with Google Chrome, installing it was a pain. But otherwise this is great!

No never used mint before, run Gentoo on my server , Debian with XBMC on my media player and still run Gentoo on my main computer. Not reloaded it for YEARS!!! Still use Fluxbox as my desktop gui. That one you have looks decent.
Mint appears to use apt-get. So would have thought it would be easy to install chrome etc.

    apt-get install chromium-browser

What was their reasoning behind not wanting you to use Google?

Something along the lines of trying to persuade people to use search providers that helped to fund Mint. Same reason why Chrome was more difficult than it needed to be.

Yeah, Mint is a branch. It's designed to be an out-of-the-box distro, basically ready to use right away. I didn't have to load codecs, or Libre Office, or Flash, or a lot of other essential items. Just worked, no fuss. And it's exactly the sort of thing Linux needs to grow.

I loaded the latest version of Ubuntu on an old laptop, but I didn't like it, so I switched to CentOS 6.

Give Mint a try, even Windows 7 wasn't this easy and hassle free to install and use.
