I've recently gotten back into torrenting and all that crap and I noticed something.

I was downloading something that had 10,000 seeds and only got to speeds of around 8kb/s.

I download something that has 10-15 seeds and get 100kb/s+.

Is there a reason for this? I would think that more seeds would mean faster downloading, but I figure you guys know significantly more than I do, so here's this thread.

A lesson in torrenting theory would do me good. I would have googled, but I think that googling torrents would be pretty fruitless.

Did the torrent in question have a private tracker? Are all the proper ports being forwarded? What is your max connections set to in your torrenting program? What's your max upload set to? What's your max download set to? And, are you on Comcast/Time Warner?

I used to have the same problem with torrent.

the highest I ever saw was 800 kb/s

switched to usenet...2 mb/s ALL the time.

Some time high number of Seeds dont mean fast d/l speed. If there are alot of leechers then you might not get good speed.

Aslo what Super Chris said about the ports.

If it had that many seeds, it probably had about half as many leechers. Seeing as people don't really devote full upload bandwidth and leechers devote full download bandwidth, you're probably not gonna get killer speeds.

As mentioned, check forwarded ports, check max connections per torrent and max upload slots as well. Most torrent programs allow you to limit upload bandwidth, like uTorrent. It's great for when you're downloading so it doesn't bog down your connection but set it back to 0: Unlimited when you're done!

From what I've seen when downloading torrents, they start off slow and pick up pace. This behavior especially on public sites like isohunt and piratebay. Private sites like demonoid and bitmetv.org usually have awesome download speeds since people constantly seed to keep their ratio afloat.

    Answers in order:

    From TPB, so public.

Not sure which ports need forwarded. :/ I'm a nub.

Not sure. Where can I find it? I don't see an option to change it.

    Max up: No limit

    Max Down: No limit

    Using Embarq DSL, 1mbit.

    Vuze

    Great info. Thanks.

Thing is I have a small hard drive, so seeding things and maintaining a good seed ratio is problematic, and I'm pretty sure you need a good ratio, right?

Not really with demonoid. You're supposed to keep a 1 to 1 but its really not enforced and pretty easy to achieve anyway. Then just remove the torrent from the list.

I'd like to say that Lurker is the man. Using Demonoid I dl anywhere from 2-100x faster. High five.

    ... no, the 100x isn't a typo. 3kb/s to 300kb/s. Woop woop. :D

Another thing that alot of people overlook is your router. Some routers just can't cope with a high number of connections and begin to bog down, similar to how DoS attacks work. I haven't had a single issue with my current router (TRENDnet) but my old Linksys router would die once I hit about 100 connections, and even higher it would get to the point that dial-up would be faster.

Usenet for the win. Nzbmatrix has to much crap everywhere. Nzbsrus.com is the way to go! and tvsrus.com for tv shows!
