What a trans-friggin-parent move. I wonder if they'll drive back to Detroit if thier request/begging gets totally denied. My money says they'll fly back in the corporate jets. Automakers pitch Congress anew on rescue - MSNBC Wire Services- msnbc.com Where will that bailout money go if they do get it? detnews.com | Webvideo | Ford's most advanced assembly plant operates in rural Brazil WTF is going on?
I pray they don't get a bailout, but I know they will. Fight or die, let the markets decide. And RIP for the UAW!
I wonder why the UAW would oppose such an operation here in the States; vid doesn't say. Also, Hope this is not a re-post, but check this website out (comparing big 3 to Honda and Toyota: Big Three Auto - ProCon.org
if the fuckin automakers get the shaft, maybe it could be good for our environment? Maybe that the survivors are gonna agree to develop more clean technologies?
I like how there is a picture of them driving those POS Chevys to Washington. What a cute publicity stunt. Maybe now some of those execs will realize what pieces of shit their cars are. I'd bet 90% of American automaker execs drive Mercedes...
Seriously. There should be NOBODY building a car for that amount of money. And remember that's the average! The robots do all the really skilled stuff at this point anyway. I bet than anybody here on the forum could walk into an American auto factory and do ANY job there, and do it well, within a few weeks. That's called unskilled labor folks.
Yeah I'm pretty sure the numbers are poofed up and include benefits and pension pay but regardless...
Still dude. As a network engineer it would take someone with experience probably 6 months to come in and even get close to doing my job as well as I do. And with benefits and everything I'm probably not hitting $75 an hour. Should a sweaty guy in a factory, who could easily be replaced in a few weeks by someone off the street with opposable thumbs and a pulse, be making that kind of money? It would be like someone flipping burgers at McDonalds making $30 an hour. Hell, I'd work at McDonalds for that kind of money!
I wasn't trying to defend the big 3. I say let em fall. But you have to compare apples to apples and when the newcomers havent been running plants as long in North America they don't have the same overhead as a company who has had employees here for what? 100 years?
My friend's dad works for Ford and told me he makes over 100k with all his overtime...I damn near fainted.
I think the $75 is the average if you take everyone who works for the big three and add together their: wages, pension, benefits, and the benefits and pensions of the retired workers and then average them out. (just what i've seen it as the breakdown) Still though, they do make a shit ton of money for not a lot of work. i say let them fail. it's their fault that they tried to push trucks instead of hybrids and fuel efficiency.
I've been following this very closely and haven't decided if i want them to get bailed out or go bankrupt yet. The way i see it, bankruptcy offers all three of them out of their UAW union contracts. I don't know if you guys realize, but the big 3 don't want to pay their workers 75$ an hour, but they're locked into a contract. i read somewhere that new employees maybe around 22$ an hour after all is said and done. true the companies would not die with bankrupcy, but it would take them years to restructure. I do think the ceo's are taking it seriously after their first debockal. All 3 pledged to take 1$ a year salaries and sell all the company jets. now if they do go bankrupt your looking at 242,000 direct jobs, you have 2.5 - 3 million indirect jobs, people working for companies that supply the big 3 with parts. American car manufactures typically only make the engines, trannies, and frames/bodies. thats a lot of jobs, can we just throw that many people into unemployment, i know a few of you guys have lost your jobs and know how hard it is, now were looking at 3 million people. I say bail them out with strict terms, manditory mpg ratings, high interest on the money they borrow.
mandatory mpg ratings would be awesome, i think the government should enforce this no matter what happens, we do need to get out from under the oil companies foots that seem to be squishing everyone
The impact would be far less than the car companies and the unions would have us believe. A majority of the factories would keep producing, bankruptcy wouldn't mean they would all close their doors. The union and these bullshit contracts would be broken, and real and meaningful change could finally take place. These overpaid fat cats would simply have to work for less, just like every other industry on Earth.
bullshit gimmicks to get bailout approval.. once or if it passed, oh believe me! they'll get their money
Everyone's right for a change. This is a sign.....having to proove something different is going to happen, is a different thing for congress too. Fail or bailout, I hope alternative ways to get from point A to point B are the result. This is the perfect time for congress to leverage real change. But then, there's that Detroit/petroleum/government thing that goes on behind closed doors. it'd just take a little pocket lube in the right places and nothing but the words will change.
