I have an Acer Aspire 3000, which is very much like that one. It's a decent laptop but battery life isn't great on it. I only seem to get 1 hour 20mins of battery life on it, with the CPU running in low power mode.

My other complaint with it is that with default configuration they use half the hard drive for a recovery image. That wasnt a big issue for me though since i just repartitioned it and threw on another copy of windows.

The Sempron Mobile is a very reliable CPU though. Justin3, The Athlon 64 is a nice cpu but very power hungry. It will waste your battery fast and get very hot. The Sempron is a cooler cpu and runs at voltages between 0.9V (for powersaving) to 1.3V (default)

Other then the battery issue, which could be solved with an external battery solution, the laptop has been running generally well. It seems to have quality construction. Nothing is broken on it. I have only had it for two weeks though.

Typically I run it in the school's library boardroom powered by one of the electrical outlets. That happens to be a strong spot for the school's wifi.

Acer sucks? I guess overtaking leveno/ibm and becoming the number four laptop manufacture in the world (and overtaking toshiba by next year) means nothing.

Sure there are particular models that might have issues but you could say that about any vendor.

ThatHideousStrength, one thing you want to think about is whether or not you plan on taking it to class. If so I would look for a laptop under 4.5lbs.

The biggest issue you will have with that laptop is it's battery life, it's very poor. If you plan on leaving it plugged in then that's not an issue.

It's also not the speediest laptop out there.

If the above is not an issue then I doubt you could find a better buy. Typically though, acer offers the best bang for the buck;)

Is it possible to buy a better battery or is there only one kind for it?

    Thanks!

You could buy a spare but it would be the same one. I'm not sure if acer makes an extended battery for that particular model.

You might want to ask that question at notebookreview.com on their forums.
