Was thinking of getting one for the wife. I saw the other post on The Kindle. She wants to read books, play some games, watch a movie or two etc. The Wi-Fi is nice but I don't really want to pay extra for the 3G or 4G network. Do I have to? I haven't physically touched one so I'm currently ignorant about it. Any suggestions?

If the focus is on having a device for reading, I'd consider the Kindle vs the iPad. The screen is easy on the eyes and meant for reading. Of course, iPads are a whole shitton of fun and eReading is overrated anyway.

You wouldn't need to pay extra for 3g/4g if you just purchased through the store and not through your carrier.

    eReading is awesome.
Personally I'm thinking of waiting another year or two before buying a tablet. I feel we're in the toddler stages of device maturity and in a year or two devices will be much better than they are now.

Just finished my third book in as many weeks (Hunger Games series in fact) because of my Nook, would doubtfully have happened had it been actual books. Also, the new Simple Touch with Glowlight is a very, very, very, very, very tempting splurge to replace my (second) first-gen Nook.

Do iPads have SSD's or just a huge chunk of memory sticks? Perhaps a stupid question but, I can't find an answer.

They're using stuff that's similar to what's in a jump drive / USB memory stick. Basically non-volatile memory chips soldered onto a custom board. Which, I think is pretty standard for tablets as I've not heard of a non-hybrid tablet using SSDs.

Reading and writing isn't the bottleneck on the iPad, it's the RAM Apple puts in the device. Which with the third generation is now up to a respectable (and finally decent) 1 gb.

So I bought the 3rd Gen iPad. Any thoughts on Apps or anything else? Even though I have a Ipod but this thing is way different. Fast as all hell Wi-Fi wise as well! Pretty impressed. Netflix on this anywhere in the house is is 50% faster than my PS3 or XBOX. Why is that? The OS?

does netflix display the bitrate/resolution it's streaming at?

don't update it, jailbreak it :)

to me it seems like a giant ipod/iphone haha but thats good that your happy

probably because netflix has the new retina plugin or whatever its called.. way more optimized than for game consoles for now but i wouldn't know, netflix seems instant on my ps3, but i'm hardwired
and then again, the best quality for netflix HD i've ever seen is appletv
