It definitely LOOKS cool. I was just talking to Electric_Head about this. 1 USB Port, no replaceable battery, no upgradeable RAM. It's a piece of shit. Go look at Apple's stock right now (AAPL).
Don't forget it doesn't have an ethernet port. YAY! I don't know what market Apple is targetting with this one...someone please enlighten me, or will this be another one of those "Cube" ideas EDIT: You already pointed out the RAM

Given what it is and what it's for? $1799 isn't unreasonable. And the $3,000 model has the solid state drive as Sparky mentioned. As for the lack of external ports, upgradeability, etc, a laptop like this isn't for everyone. The truth of the matter is that my Macbook has 2GB of RAM which is all I would ever install. And I generally only use one USB port at most. If I need more there's a hub built into my monitor. The lack of any internal disc reader is a tougher pill to swallow, but Dell and the like have been doing similar with their ultra portables for year.
this is obviously for someone who is going from meeting to meeting hotel to hotel confrence to confrence where all they will be using is keynote and excel to show buisness presentations on a bluetooth projector where a slim as possible laptop is wonderful, with as much as i travel i wish i had the money for it
The people who are going to buy this thing will just take it to the Apple store when a replacement is needed. Or their assistants will. Hell, they'll probably just buy a new laptop. The general manager where I work has had something like 6-7 of the Dell equivalents in the 3-4 years he's been in the United States.
Except they can't have more than one battery, OH SHIT! All the corporate big shots I've supported have 2-4... But Sony and Toshiba offer even slimmer models with at least 2 USB ports and a removable battery...no optical, you need at least 2 USB for any laptop unless everything you own is Bluetooth data capable which not even the Ipods can do. SSDs were last years news! Honestly, what is the hype?

I am a huge apple fan, but... what the fuck? Apple have fucked up IMO. Well okay people will still buy it.. but an ultra portable would of had more sales I think. As someone who already owns a mac... why the hell would I spend au$2500 on this ($900 more than a regular macbook, and 400 away from buying a pro.) I was expecting something of a 'nano' in the macbook range. Meaning something sitting below the macbook. If they had some form of ultra portable (smaller than the current macbook.) then I would have perhaps considered buying it. As is, it is the exact same dimensions as the regular macbook except for the thickness. So pretty much they have taken a macbook, removed a bunch of shit to make it lighter and people are oohing and ahhing?
And is 1000$ more. It's a full 2 lbs lighter than the Macbook. For a laptop, this would be perfect for me. I've got dozens of movies and hundreds of tv shows ripped to my hard drive so the lack of a dvd drive isn't a big deal. I've already got a desktop that I use for gaming and more intensive programs so all I'd really use the laptop for is IMing, browsing, mail and maybe some other lower intensive things. Plus, I would have no problems taking this to class everyday as it would be non-intrusive.
as nice as this machine is for students (that dont need disc drives) they should have really put R&D into making an apple tablet
Electric Head they are targeting the ultra portable market and trying to take it a step further. Do Sony and Toshiba really have slimmer models? Part of the keynote addressed the fact that this was the smallest with similar specs. Im no apple fanboy, my ipod is the closest I have ever come. But I could see myself picking up one of these if the price came down. Would be pretty handy for traveling, the lack of battery swap isn't an issue for me and the lack of ethernet port isn't either as I am all wireless now.
Well yes that's a retarded system for a computer enthusiast (performance-wise) But the Air got very nice features! That solid-state HDD is my personal highlight.
Eh, tablets are an incredibly niche market. If you want a Macbook tablet, there's a company that does a third party mod.
This post sums up how I feel about this laptop. Unless you literally have money to burn, there is no reason to buy this thing.
All those are negligible points. The only one I have issues with is the battery. This isn't for the enthusiast who wants to fuck around with it. It's for regular people how just want a small and nice speedy machine. Nerds piss me off sometimes.
Sure, but the macbook air IS the most limited laptop being sold today. think about that for a second, you are paying all this money for that.
No the asus eee pc is the most limited.. well for general consumers. The olpc laptop doesn't count. Unless you live in a 3rd world country.
This is pretty much truth. But the battery is understandable considering the form and Apple's desire for fluid and clean designs.
